Paul Kayser (September 22, 1869 in Hamburg, † September 23, 1942 in Donaueschingen) was a founding member of the Hamburg Artists' Club of 1897 and the Hamburg Secession. He is a good example of a Hamburg artist who was strongly networked in the city of Hamburg and its cultural circle at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.

The project team selected his work "The Midday Hour" for the large-scale interpretation in Norderstedt. The artists from APHENOAH first transformed the landscape-format painting by Paul Kayser into their own portrait-format composition, created for the façade on Schmuggelstieg. But the artist duo also started in terms of content:

"In contrast to the original work, we have brought the two dock workers closer together, who are looking across at Hamburg in the evening sun, designed the landscape viewed to be more contemporary and the colors more intense. With the now warmer mood and the new closeness that this creates, we want to both break up the traditional image of the strong man and correspond to the new possibility of human closeness after Corona," explains Oliver Hollatz.

“With this small change, we preserve all the elements present in the original work and thus its visual aesthetic. At the same time, we subtly bring in contemporary debates, which gives them something everyday or already integrated rather than provocatively dominating the picture as a big debate,” adds Noah Kauertz.

“In our works there is always a focus on color as an element that creates the image. As always, our own world of colors found its way into the painting process. Here we were also able to build on Paul Kayser, who was strongly influenced by Albert Marquet. In Fauvism, which Marquet co-founded and which is regarded as a pioneer of classical modernism, color, detached from reality, plays the decisive role. The message of the painterly works of Fauvism thus came about exclusively from the harmony of the color surfaces,” summarizes Oliver Hollatz in conclusion.
