The Crystal Ship 2026 markeert de 10e verjaardag van het befaamde openbare kunstfestival van Oostende, dit jaar samengesteld door Matthias Schoenaerts, die werkt onder zijn artiestennaam Zenith. Voor deze jubileumeditie brengt Schoenaerts meer dan twintig nationale en internationale kunstenaars samen uit de graffiti-, street art- en hedendaagse schilderkunst – de drie disciplines die zijn eigen artistieke visie vormgeven. Van 30 maart tot en met 11 april 2026 transformeren deze kunstenaars Oostende tot een tijdelijk open atelier, waar ze nieuwe muurschilderingen creëren in de hele stad, terwijl inwoners en bezoekers het proces van dichtbij kunnen volgen.

Voor hun eerste grootschalige muurschildering presenteert het multidisciplinaire duo Patricia Ghijsens & Yorgos Maraziotis een werk dat symboliek, intimiteit en sculpturale helderheid samenbrengt in één krachtig beeld. Bekend om hun vloeiende overgang tussen beeldhouwkunst, schilderkunst, grafiek en design, vertalen ze hun atelierervaring naar een muur van 12 bij 6 meter die zowel minutieus geconstrueerd als emotioneel rauw aanvoelt.

De muurschildering is geïnspireerd op een tarotserie waaraan Patricia werkt, met name de kaart De Geliefden. Hun interpretatie toont twee complementaire figuren, opgesloten in een rechthoek en verbonden door de slang van Adam en Eva. Het rood-groene kleurenpalet heeft al associaties opgeroepen; sommige kijkers zien er Palestijnse kleuren in, maar de kunstenaars benadrukken de veelheid aan betekenissen. Hun werk is nooit eendimensionaal; het is een constellatie van betekenissen, gevormd door contrast, materialiteit en de eigen projecties van de kijker.

Hoewel Yorgos al eerder muren had beschilderd, was dit Patricia's eerste ervaring met een muurschildering op deze schaal. Als schilder en boekillustrator van opleiding benaderde ze de muur met zowel nieuwsgierigheid als angst. Haar hoogtevrees betekende dat ze de enige kunstenaar bij The Crystal Ship was die in een harnas werkte, terwijl ze de steigers op en af klom om de verhoudingen en compositie van een afstand te controleren. Op de laatste dag gleed ze zelfs van een ladder, een onverwachte herinnering aan de fysieke inspanningen die openbare kunst met zich meebrengt. "Ik weet niet of ik een muurschildering alleen zou kunnen maken," geeft ze toe. "Gelukkig was Yorgos er voor de hoge gedeelten."

Het duo werkte uitsluitend met penselen, grotere versies van de gereedschappen die ze in hun atelier gebruiken, en liet spuitbussen achterwege ten gunste van een tactiele, schilderachtige aanpak. Het resultaat is een muurschildering die handgemaakt, intiem en bewust imperfect aanvoelt, en die de gevoeligheid en eerlijkheid weerspiegelt die hun werk kenmerken.

In Ostend wordt The Lovers een stille confrontatie: twee figuren gebonden, gespiegeld en zwevend tussen mythe en moderniteit. Het nodigt kijkers uit na te denken over verbondenheid, beperkingen en de verhalen die we erven, een passende bijdrage aan een festival dat gewijd is aan opnieuw kijken.

The Crystal Ship 2026 marks the 10th anniversary of Ostend’s renowned public art festival, curated this year by Matthias Schoenaerts, working under his artist name Zenith. For this milestone edition, Schoenaerts brings together more than twenty national and international artists from graffiti, street art and contemporary painting — the three disciplines that shape his own artistic vision. From 30 March to 11 April 2026, these artists will transform Ostend into a temporary open studio, creating new murals across the city while residents and visitors witness the process up close.

For their first large-scale mural, the multidisciplinary duo Patricia Ghijsens & Yorgos Maraziotis bring a work that merges symbolism, intimacy, and sculptural clarity into a single charged image. Known for moving fluidly between sculpture, painting, printmaking, and design, the pair translate their studio sensibilities into a 12-by-6‑metre wall that feels both meticulously constructed and emotionally raw.

The mural draws from a tarot series Patricia has been developing, specifically the card The Lovers. Their interpretation presents two complementary figures confined within a rectangle, bound together by the serpent of Adam and Eve. The red and green palette has already sparked associations, some viewers read Palestinian colour, but the artists insist on multiplicity. Their work is never a single message; it is a constellation of meanings shaped by contrast, materiality, and the viewer’s own projections.

Though Yorgos had painted walls before, this was Patricia’s first encounter with mural scale. A painter and book illustrator by training, she approached the wall with both curiosity and apprehension. Her fear of heights meant she was the only artist at The Crystal Ship working in a harness, climbing up and down the scaffolding to check proportions and composition from a distance. On the final day she even slipped from a ladder, an unplanned reminder of the physical demands behind public art. “I don’t know if I could handle a mural alone,” she admits. “Luckily Yorgos was there for the high parts.”

The duo worked exclusively with brushes, larger versions of the tools they use in the studio, eschewing spray cans in favour of a tactile, painterly approach. The result is a mural that feels handcrafted, intimate, and deliberately imperfect, echoing the sensitivity and honesty that define their practice.

In Ostend, The Lovers becomes a quiet confrontation: two figures bound, mirrored, and suspended between myth and modernity. It invites viewers to consider connection, constraint, and the stories we inherit, an apt contribution to a festival dedicated to looking again.
