In de zomer van 2026 transformeerde de Antwerpse street artist SMOK zeven provinciale pompstations langs Antwerpse waterlopen tot monumentale kunstwerken. Ontdek ze allemaal hier. Dit werk vind je nabij de dijk van de Nete

Wat ooit anonieme technische gebouwen waren, zijn vandaag opvallende landmarks waar kunst, natuur en waterbeheer samenkomen. Het project, een initiatief van de Provincie Antwerpen, toont hoe publieke kunst zelfs de meest functionele infrastructuur een nieuwe betekenis kan geven.

Voor elk pompstation liet SMOK zich inspireren door de dieren die in de directe omgeving leven. Zijn kenmerkende fotorealistische stijl brengt vogels, vissen, amfibieën en andere inheemse soorten tot leven op de gevels. Elk kunstwerk vertelt zo een lokaal verhaal over biodiversiteit en nodigt wandelaars, fietsers en buurtbewoners uit om aandachtiger naar het landschap te kijken. Zoals SMOK zelf zegt: "Mijn doel is om mensen te laten glimlachen of te laten nadenken over onze omgang met de natuur."

De locaties zijn zorgvuldig gekozen. De pompstations spelen een essentiële rol in het provinciale waterbeheer. Zoals de Provincie Antwerpen uitlegt: "De pompstations zijn onmisbaar voor de bescherming tegen wateroverlast. Wanneer grote rivieren zoals de Nete een hoge waterstand hebben door bijvoorbeeld langdurige neerslag, kunnen zijlopen het afstromende water er niet in kwijt. Dat kan stroomopwaarts voor wateroverlast zorgen."

Door deze technische infrastructuur te combineren met monumentale street art ontstaat een unieke verbinding tussen ecologie, klimaatadaptatie en cultuur. De murals geven niet alleen kleur aan het landschap, maar maken ook zichtbaar hoe natuur en waterbeheer onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden zijn. Zo nodigt SMOK bezoekers uit om met nieuwe aandacht te kijken naar zowel de dieren langs de waterkant als de infrastructuur die hen – en ons – beschermt.

What were once anonymous technical buildings are today striking landmarks where art, nature, and water management converge. The project, an initiative of the Province of Antwerp, demonstrates how public art can give new meaning to even the most functional infrastructure.

For each pumping station, SMOK drew inspiration from the animals living in the immediate vicinity. His distinctive photorealistic style brings birds, fish, amphibians, and other native species to life on the facades. Each artwork thus tells a local story about biodiversity and invites walkers, cyclists, and local residents to look more closely at the landscape. As SMOK himself says: "My goal is to make people smile or think about our relationship with nature."

The locations were carefully chosen. The pumping stations play an essential role in provincial water management. As the Province of Antwerp explains: "The pumping stations are indispensable for protection against flooding. When major rivers such as the Nete have high water levels due to prolonged rainfall, for example, tributaries cannot discharge the runoff water into them. This can cause flooding upstream."

By combining this technical infrastructure with monumental street art, a unique connection is created between ecology, climate adaptation, and culture. The murals not only add color to the landscape but also make visible how nature and water management are inextricably linked. In this way, SMOK invites visitors to look with renewed attention at both the animals along the waterfront and the infrastructure that protects them – and us.
