Voor het jubileumjaar van Gaston Berghmans, een van de meest iconische komieken uit de Belgische cultuurgeschiedenis, creëerde de Duitse kunstenaar Case Maclaim een ingetogen maar krachtig eerbetoon in Merksem. De locatie is niet toevallig: dezelfde elektriciteitscabine op het Victor Roossensplein was in 2010 het canvas voor de allereerste street art in Merksem, toen Bird en Gun‑T er hun eigen hommage aan Gaston schilderden. Met deze nieuwe mural brengt Case dus een reboot van dat historische moment, een nieuwe laag in een lopend verhaal.

Tijdens zijn korte verblijf vond Case inspiratie in kleine, rauwe momenten van menselijkheid, zoals een chaotische hal waar families tussen stapels goedkope schoenen zochten. Dat soort alledaagse scènes, vol gebaren en beweging, vormen de kern van zijn werk. Pas later ontdekte hij hoe diep Gaston Berghmans verankerd zit in Merksem, onder meer via het enorme 350 meter lange portret langs het Gaston Berghmanspad. Daardoor wist hij dat zijn mural geen uitleg hoefde te geven: de buurt draagt Gaston al generaties lang.

Opvallend is dat het portret bewust een beetje onafgewerkt oogt. Dat is een bewuste keuze van Case, die speelt met de spanning tussen controle en openheid: hoeveel informatie hij geeft, en hoeveel hij weglaat zodat de kijker het beeld zelf mee kan afmaken. Die benadering sluit mooi aan bij de geschiedenis van de plek.

Daarnaast koos Case ervoor om te werken in hetzelfde kleurenpalet als Gun‑T, die de aanpalende zijde van de cabine schilderde. Zo ontstaat een subtiele visuele dialoog tussen het verleden en het heden, tussen twee generaties kunstenaars die elk op hun manier hulde brengen aan dezelfde figuur.

Het resultaat is een warm, menselijk eerbetoon dat perfect past in de straten waar Gastons geest nog altijd voelbaar is.

For the anniversary year of Gaston Berghmans, one of the most iconic comedians in Belgian cultural history, German artist Case Maclaim created a subdued yet powerful tribute in Merksem. The location is no coincidence: the same electricity substation on Victor Roossensplein served as the canvas for the very first street art in Merksem in 2010, when Bird and Gun‑T painted their own homage to Gaston there. With this new mural, Case thus presents a reboot of that historic moment, adding a new layer to an ongoing story.

During his brief stay, Case found inspiration in small, raw moments of humanity, such as a chaotic hallway where families searched through piles of cheap shoes. Such everyday scenes, full of gestures and movement, form the core of his work. Only later did he discover how deeply Gaston Berghmans is rooted in Merksem, partly through the enormous 350-meter-long portrait along the Gaston Berghmans Path. As a result, he knew that his mural needed no explanation: the neighborhood has carried Gaston for generations. It is striking that the portrait deliberately appears somewhat unfinished. This is a conscious choice by Case, who plays with the tension between control and openness: how much information he provides, and how much he omits so that the viewer can help complete the image themselves. This approach aligns beautifully with the history of the location.

Additionally, Case chose to work within the same color palette as Gun‑T, who painted the adjacent side of the cabin. This creates a subtle visual dialogue between the past and the present, between two generations of artists who each, in their own way, pay tribute to the same figure.

The result is a warm, human tribute that fits perfectly in the streets where Gaston's spirit is still palpable.
