<div>This stop on the “Camino Primitivo” is one of the oldest routes to Santiago for ancient Christian pilgrims, and was established by the King of Asturias hundreds of years ago. It is also known for being one of the toughest and most difficult journeys over tough terrain to reach the city of Santiago.<br><br>This part of Asturias is a region of mountains, strong winds, storms, and the sea. I identified so much with this site and with the concept of the camino primitivo - not only does this piece depict a pilgrim, but it also considers the growth that comes with suffering and difficulty. Many of us have experienced existential crises, highs, lows, gains and losses during the past year, and through this piece I aimed to reflect on the duality of beauty and pain existing simultaneously; and the search for deeper meaning throughout life’s journeys.</div>

Manolo Mesa

<div>The theme chosen for Manolo was the old San Claudio / San Cloyo earthenware factory, founded in the parish of the same name in the municipality of Oviedo/Uviéu in 1901. From its beginnings the factory was characterized by the use of the most advanced ceramic decoration techniques of its time. In 2007 the economic situation of the company was already critical and the company finally closed on April 30, 2009, leaving behind 108 years of history.<br><br>For the participatory design process, an attempt was made to get in touch with citizens of Oviedo/Uviéu who had pieces of tableware from the factory. This call out prompted a good response, and the artist made a selection among all the tableware offered. People whose pieces were selected were able to enjoy a personal encounter with Manolo Mesa. In this way, the artist was able to discover the stories behind each piece of tableware and take photographs that would lead to the final work of the mural itself&nbsp;</div>

<div>The theme chosen for Harsa focused on traditional Asturian stories, and it was the writer and storyteller Milio del Nido, a key figure in this field, who helped us discover this magical world, sharing a very pleasant afternoon with us in a virtual meeting where we were able to discover at first-hand everything that lies behind these fables and listen live to some fragments of her stories.<br><br>We discover the power of oral culture, the way in which stories become universal by traveling by word of mouth through time and territory. Likewise, we analyze the particularities of Asturian stories, their morals and characters. The mural is based on the traditional Asturian story “El corderín muertu fríu” (the deathly-cold lamb).&nbsp;</div>

<div>The theme chosen for Lidia was the figure of the writer Dolores Medio, a writer born in Oviedo/Uviéu who was awarded the Nadal Prize in 1956 for her novel “Nosotros, Los Rivero”. Dolores was a woman ahead of her time, nonconformist and visionary, as well as one of the best writers of the postwar period.<br><br>To immerse the artist in the subject, we had a virtual meeting with Cosme Marina, President of the Dolores Medio Foundation, from whom we could hear at first-hand about the world and work of this Oviedo writer: her life, her passions, her writings and her struggles.<br><br>Lidia wanted to portray Dolores wearing her tie and with short hair, which broke with the molds of the time, accompanied by her typewriter, and stalked by two vultures that symbolize the censorship from which her novels suffered.&nbsp;</div>

Manu García

<div>The theme chosen for Manu was “Les fiestes de prau” (meadow festivals), one of the social events par excellence of Asturian culture. “Les fiestes de prau” are one of the great summer events in Asturias, combining culture, tradition, gastronomy and nature. In Manu´s own words they are “a point of celebration and communion among the people.”<br><br>Manu, the Asturian representative in this edition of Parees, was inspired by the photographs in the Asturias digital memory archive to create a mural with mixed techniques (paint, spray and transfer) divided into two parts: the day, with the most familiar aspects of the festivities, and the night, being more carefree and celebratory.&nbsp;</div>

<div>The mural of Mina Hamada has had a contextualized participatory process. Children aged 4 and 5 years from the Poeta Ángel González and Carmen Ruiz Tilve de la Corredoría public schools were asked to make drawings of animals and/or plants to serve as inspiration for Mina´s mural.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Udatxo´s mural has had a contextualized participatory process. The mural design has been developed with the help of old photographs provided by the oldest bar in the neighborhood, with more than 100 years of history.&nbsp;</div>

Matth Velvet

<div>Matth’s mural has had a contextualized participatory process in collaboration with the Olloniego Neighborhood Association. The mural, located in Olloniego, which in its time was one of the main mining centers of central Asturies, revolves around this economic activity, as a tribute to the industrial past of the area and to honour the historical memory of all those people who worked in the mines.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Taking into account its dynamic and fun style, traditional Asturian sport was chosen as the theme for this mural. With the collaboration of the “6 Counties Rural Sports Group” photographs and information were sent to the artists so that they could develop the design for the mural.&nbsp;</div>

Catalina Rodríguez Villazón

<div>Catalina is an artist from Villaviciosa. In her work the combination of strength and delicacy, the search for balance, and the importance of gesture are recurring themes.<br><br>“I chose Margarita because she is a woman I admire. Being able to get in touch with her, tell her about the idea of the mural, express my respect and share the process was a unique experience. She is a great scientist and worker who represents many values which I believe in.<br><br>She always stressed the importance of investing in science and education, of constant work and of following the passion for what one loves. The possibility of participating in Parees Fest and being able to capture such a career and achievement was a great opportunity.”&nbsp;</div>

<div>The work of this Italian artist is characterized by transferring to the public space the works of the great masters of art history with the aim of democratizing this heritage. The artist works with spray paint since he comes from the world of traditional graffiti and another of the objectives of the work is to destigmatize the use of sprays.<br><br>It is the first time that this renowned artist paints in Spain and he has done so with a piece inspired by ‘The triumph of Bacchus’, a work by the Spanish artist Velázquez that is preserved in the Prado Museum and was created in 1629.&nbsp;</div>

<div>The proposed theme for the mural project focuses on Asturian wildlife threatened with extinction. To this end, the artist was sent an informative dossier via e-mail on the subject. Taquen chose to work around the figure of the wolf, an animal described in the Plan for the Regulation of Natural Resources of Asturias (PORNA) as a “singular species”.&nbsp;</div>

Alfalfa

<div>Alfalfa focuses his mural work around the idea of magical and mythological beings. It makes sense, therefore, that the theme proposed for this mural project revolves around Asturian mythology. To facilitate this, the Festival presented the artist with two books on Asturian Mythology.<br><br>In the Ronda Sur of Oviedo, Nicolas Alfalfa leaves us his incredible mural inspired by the Xana, fairy of Asturian mythology, half woman and half snake. The Xana, one of the best-known characters of Asturian and Leonese mythology, is typically shown next to a fountain or some other special place, waiting to charm a brave man on the first day of summer&nbsp;</div>

<div>His mural is a tribute to the multidisciplinary artist Tino Casal, made in his native town through a participatory process between the artist XAV, the Tudela Veguín Neighbourhood Association, and the friends and family of Tino Casal.&nbsp;</div>

<div>The mural is inspired by one of the most important animals of Asturias, the brown bear. The vegetation around its silhouette is also related to the Asturian flora. “This was my way of paying homage to this strong animal and the beauty that surrounds Oviedo.<br><br>It is also a way of raising awareness about the danger of extinction of this species, symbolized in the wall with the silhouette of the bear as if it were a void in the composition, like a gap between the flora through which a starry sky sneaks in“.&nbsp;</div>

<div>The theme proposal for their mural project revolved around the figure of women in traditional Asturian culture and folklore. They met the group of pandereteras “Nun tamos Toes” who play traditional Asturian songs but with updated lyrics with an activist and feminist slant.<br><br>The whole composition refers to the figure of the woman: the nocturnal colors, the tambourines symbolizing the moon...&nbsp;</div>

<div>The mural made in Trubia, “Forjando comunidad”, is made for the centenary of the Trubia Casino. The piece recovers the collective memory and vindicates the value of this social space created under the wing of the now-closed weapons factory located in the town.&nbsp;</div>

<div>As the neighbours asked for, the mural evokes the ‘Centralilla (power plant) de Hidrocantábrico’ in Ciudad Naranco which was demolished at the beginning of this century despite of the neighbours’ opposition.<br><br>The owners association of the building remembered this event through a collaborative process with them.&nbsp;</div>

<div>The artist had the opportunity to meet the neighbours and listen to their stories first hand, discover anecdotes and bring the memories of the neighbourhood back.<br><br>The final idea for the mural was born from those meetings. A ‘Pumar’ (apple tree) which gives a name to the ‘hood: ‘Pumarín’. Because, as the neigbours were saying, the area started being an apple tree field in the outskirts of the city.&nbsp;</div>

<div>This work explores the idea of identity from its playful side. Bitxo offers creative processes that search for cooperative strategies in order to create pieces that connect with the surroundings.<br><br>The wall was born as a collaborative process with the citizens of Ciudad Naranco. It’s an interactive piece with chalkboard areas opened to old and young ones for creating, experimenting, staining, erasing… This is a propossal that invite us to make the walls of the city as ours.&nbsp;</div>

<div>La Creatura is an association whose headquarters are in Langreo. It was created at the end of 2015 with the goal of promoting all aspects of urban culture. Formed by different profile urban artists, we work through interventions in the environment, using graffiti and mural painting mainly. We intend to redefine public spaces and to stablish a dialogue with the neighbours, depicting an idea of the city as something that is alive and constantly evolving.&nbsp;</div>

<div>He observe the environment of the murals in order to find evocations and memmories from every place and then interpretating them in the walls, adjusting them to the format and putting all together in a organic and balanced way with the context that surrounds his work.<br><br>Architecture stimulates him to find new ways of changing the look of the building and he exchange visual information in a way that not only the building, but also his painting keep a main role, looking for a final neutral esthetic, as he want to respect the coexistence with the neighbours and the surroundings of the building.&nbsp;</div>
