Oostende is een optische illusie rijker, want de Londense straatkunstenaar Fanakapan liet voor The Crystal Ship festival een verbluffende mural achter. Wereldwijd bekend om zijn glanzende 3D-ballontekeningen, tovert hij met spuitverf en metallic reflecties muren om tot levendige feestjes voor het oog. Zijn hyperrealistische stijl wekt de illusie dat zijn kunst van de muur zweeft – een verbluffend spel met licht, perspectief en diepte dat voorbijgangers laat twijfelen: kijk ik naar verf, of naar echte folie?

Fanakapan is volledig autodidact, maar zijn scherpe oog voor detail komt niet uit het niets: hij begon ooit in de wereld van prop making, waar precisie en illusie centraal staan. Vanuit die achtergrond evolueerde zijn werk al snel naar straatkunst, met een unieke mix van vakmanschap en fantasie. Zijn eerste stappen zette hij met sjablonen en graffiti, maar zijn signatuurstijl – hyperrealistische chrome ballonnen – groeide al snel uit tot zijn handelsmerk.

Zijn werk oogt luchtig, maar draagt vaak een diepere betekenis. Achter de glans schuilt een laag van nostalgie, humor en soms maatschappijkritiek. Een ballon in de vorm van een vredesteken, of opgeblazen letters die op het punt staan te knappen – Fanakapan speelt met vergankelijkheid, gewichtloosheid en de fragiele aard van het bestaan. “Ik hou ervan om de hersenen te foppen,” zegt hij zelf. “Street art mag verrassen en verwonderen.”

Voor The Crystal Ship 2025 liet Fanakapan zich inspireren door het thema CHANGE, en dan vooral door de opkomst van artificiële intelligentie. Zijn mural toont een ontmoeting – of confrontatie – tussen twee robots: een ouder, verweerd model en een glimmende, nieuwe versie. “AI verandert ons leven ingrijpend,” legt hij uit. “Ik wilde dat verbeelden met twee generaties technologie, en tegelijk een persoonlijke laag toevoegen.”

Die persoonlijke laag komt onder andere voort uit een recente reis naar Japan en gebeurtenissen in zijn privéleven. Fanakapan werkt niet digitaal; hij haalt zijn inspiratie uit de dingen om zich heen – letterlijk. Eén van de afgebeelde robots staat gewoon bij hem in de keuken. Dit contrast tussen futuristische inhoud en ambachtelijke werkwijze versterkt de kracht van het beeld: een visuele botsing van technologie en nostalgie.

De mural is een ode aan verandering, een reflectie op vooruitgang en een speelse reminder dat niet alles is wat het lijkt. Met zijn typische stijl en vakmanschap weet Fanakapan opnieuw te verbazen – en Oostende is weer een parel rijker.

Ostend is an optical illusion richer, because the London street artist Fanakapan left a stunning Mural for The Crystal Ship Festival. Worldwide known for its shiny 3D ball disgues, he transforms walls with spray paint and metallic reflections into lively parties for the eyes. His hyper -realistic style arouses the illusion that his art floats from the wall - a stunning game with light, perspective and depth that makes passers -by doubt: am I looking at paint, or real foil?

Fanakapan is completely autodidact, but his sharp eye for detail does not come out of nowhere: he once started in the world of Prop Making, where precision and illusion are central. From that background, his work soon evolved to street art, with a unique mix of craftsmanship and fantasy. He took his first steps with templates and graffiti, but his signature style - hyper -realistic chrome balloons - quickly grew into his trademark.

His work looks light, but often bears a deeper meaning. Behind the shine is a layer of nostalgia, humor and sometimes social criticism. A balloon in the form of a peace sign, or bloated letters that are about to break - Fanakapan plays with transience, weightlessness and the fragile nature of existence. "I like to fool the brain," he says. "Street Art can surprise and wonder."

For The Crystal Ship 2025, Fanakapan was inspired by the theme change, and especially by the rise of artificial intelligence. His Mural shows a meeting - or confrontation - between two robots: a parent, weathered model and a shiny, new version. "AI changes our lives radically," he explains. "I wanted to depict that with two generations of technology, and at the same time add a personal layer."

That personal layer comes from, among other things, a recent trip to Japan and events in his private life. Fanakapan does not work digitally; He gets his inspiration from the things around him - literally. One of the robots shown is simply in the kitchen. This contrast between futuristic content and artisanal method reinforces the power of the image: a visual clash of technology and nostalgia.

The Mural is an ode to change, a reflection on progress and a playful reminder that is not all that it seems. With its typical style and craftsmanship, Fanakapan is surprised again - and Ostend is a pearl richer again.
