Lonneke van Zutphen

<div>Lonneke van Zutphen is one of the initiators of "Trotse Muren" ( Dutch for Proud Walls). One of the reasons she started Trotse Muren is that she wanted to see more art on walls in the streets of Zwolle. With Trotse Muren, she offers all kinds of artists a chance to show their work in Zwolle. The artist herself has been creating murals throughout the country for more than 15 years now.<br>Studio Steengoed is a separate company she founded in 2021. The paintings she makes under the name Studio Steengoed all have a very special quality: the paintings purify the air! One square metre of wall painting with this paint purifies as much air as a fully grown tree.<br>Lonneke has painted two murals at the Stadkamer: a vase of flowers and a bird. The paint is specifically developed to attract air pollutants such as nitrogen. It then converts them into harmless nitrates. Every mural by Studio Steengoed thus becomes an air-purifying mural that helps to protect people from harmful gases.&nbsp;<br><br>Lonneke studied applied spatial design and was trained to be a visual arts teacher and she lives in Zwolle.</div>

Henk Nyenhuis

<div>Henk Nyenhuis (Henk Nijenhuis, Hellendoorn 1965). Henk has been creative since childhood and he always drew a lot. At the LTS he was very skilled with wood and at the MTS (Technical Chemistry) he learned a lot about paint and chemical reactions. His further education was the teacher training course Drawing &amp; Handicraft at Windesheim University of Applied Sciences in Zwolle.&nbsp; After this he almost immediately became self-employed and started to focus on decorating and making murals for private individuals and a lot in the catering industry. Over the years he has more and more grown into an artist, although he still does not think so, because you have to keep learning in life, even from your mistakes. A work of art is never really finished.<br><br>This wall consists of many images that together tell a story. Henk Nyenhuis portrays the present and future of the city of Zwolle. On the left side of the mural, seen from Bethlemskerkplein, you see the capital of Overijssel as the 'carnival city of the North'. Decadence at its best. Prosperity. On the right side you can see the Aquarian age with Zwolle in the future. Buddha, zen and consciousness.</div>

Roy Schreuder

<div>Joram Roukes and Roy Schreuder painted the whole building (some walls measure 6 x 30 meters) on the grounds of "Creative Coöperation" (de Creatieve Corporatie), a gathering place for creatives in the city of Zwolle. Roukes and Schreuder painted a wolf on one side of the building and a large boat on the other. Both are collage-like compositions. The theme for the work of art, as devised by the entrepreneurs of the Creative Cooperation, is cooperation and connection. The wolf, broken free from its chains, stands for the individual strengths of the qualities of the collective. The boat not only refers to the shipping history of the place, but is also a representation of keeping an operation afloat. The two expressions are different in character, organic and industrial,&nbsp; mobile and static, but represent the same idea of unity and connection. The wolf hunts down the idea with which this project is realised. The boat is the collective structure. The Project. The Cooperation. Both wolf and boat are connected by the decor of brightly coloured shapes and heavy chains. The chains have a multitude of references. It anchors the boat and at the same time it symbolises the breaking loose of the norm.</div>

Donovan Spaanstra

<div>Thomas a Kempis was born around 1380 in Kempen. Thomas was a priest, writer, mystic and copyist. At the age of 12, he left for Deventer to study. There he came into contact with the Modern Devotion Movement. He became an Augustinian monk and from 1398 lived most of his life in Zwolle in the monastery on Agnietenberg. In 1413 or 1414 he became a priest. Although Thomas withdrew into the monastery, he did not lose sight of the world around him. He wrote down quotations and sayings from his surroundings in a notebook. These notes probably formed the basis for his "De Imitatione Christi". Within Christian culture, this work is considered the most widely read book after the Bible. The book was written in Latin and has been translated into almost every language.&nbsp; New translations are still being published. Of the more than 3000 editions, about 1000 are kept in the British Museum. In the Royal Library in Brussels the handwritten copy is kept. Besides the "Imitatione", Thomas wrote many other works. Thomas a Kempis died on July 25, 1471 in the monastery where he had lived for more than 70 years. He was buried in the monastery and later exhumed again, and his mortal remains were kept in a shrine in the St Michael's Church in Zwolle. In 2006, his remains were transferred to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption in Zwolle.&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Donovan Spaanstra (Zwolle, 1971) generally draws his inspiration from the old masters. He says: 'I translate classic art with the modern medium of the spray can". In the media Spaanstra is also called Rembrandt with an aerosol.</div>

Thomas a Kempis

<div>Hermanus "Herman" Brood (1946 – 2001) was a Dutch musician, painter, actor and poet. As a musician he achieved artistic and commercial success in the 1970s and 1980s, and was called "the greatest and only Dutch rock 'n' roll star". Later in life he started a successful career as a painter. Known for his hedonistic lifestyle of "sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll", Brood was an enfant terrible and a cultural figure. On 11 July 2001, depressed by the failure of his drug rehabilitation program and facing serious medical problems because of his prolonged drug use, he committed suicide by jumping from the roof of the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel at the age of 54. He left a note, stating "Party on. I'll be seeing you."&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>This portrait of former Zwolle resident Herman Brood is painted on a panel in front of the scaffolding around the church Grote Kerk, which is currently being restored. Spaanstra painted the portrait based on a photo by Eva Depoorter. Spaanstra's work can be viewed as long as the scaffolding around the church is in place. After that time, it may probably be on display in the Herman Brood Museum.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Donovan Spaanstra (Zwolle, 1971) generally draws his inspiration from the old masters, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt van Rijn, Caravaggio and Michelangelo. Studio Giftig

<div>Kaspar van Leek (1983, Philipsburg St. Maarten) en Niels van Swaemen (1981, Eindhoven) are the founders of Studio Giftig, an urban artist duo based in the Netherlands. They specialize in photorealistic paintings and murals, often with a surrealistic twist. Each work they make is unique, because they photograph their own models which they use for their paintings.&nbsp;</div><div>Kaspar and Niels met in 2007, when both of them were already active in street art for some time. In 2007 the first collaboration projects were picked up and a vacant warehouse served as base for their studio. Within this warehouse there was a storage room for toxic substances and chemicals, where they kept their paint and spray cans. The name Studio Giftig refers to this storage room (because giftig is the Dutch translation of Toxic). In 2012 the duo decided to fully devote themselves to murals and in the following years they developed their unique painting style. In 2021 Studio Giftig started a new concept: Music &amp; Murals. A series of murals in collaboration with the greatest Dutch musicians, where the murals are based on songs from their repertoire.&nbsp;</div><div>This wall is the third painting for that project. In collaboration with Trotse Muren and musicians Typhoon and Sticks a mural on Poppodium Hedon was painted, based on the song "Verre oosten remix"&nbsp; (Far East Remix), a track in which the entire Fakkelbrigade (torch brigade) raps and represents the city of Zwolle. Verre oosten was written to give Hip Hop a different sound than the one that came from the Cities in the west at the time.&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Typhoon: Imro Glenn Lubertus Emile de Randamie, better known by his stage name Typhoon, is a Dutch rapper/singer of Surinamese descent. De Randamie grew up in the Veluwe village of 't Harde and comes from a musical family.&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Sticks: Junte Uiterwijk, better known as Sticky Steez, Sticks or Stickert, is a Dutch rapper from Zwolle. Between 1998 and 2007, Sticks formed the rap formation Opgezwolle together with rapper Phreako Rico and DJ Delic.</div>
