<div>American artist Noël C. Baker brings life and color through her art to an otherwise grey world. Her arms reach out, and she opens her hands to the sky. Energy in the form of color and light escapes and spreads rapidly across her canvas, which is the whole world. On one side, we see a sea of ​​buildings illuminated by colorful clouds overhead. The grayness of the city gives way to a kaleidoscope of energy. On the other side, Noël fights grey urbanization with nature by her side. A tree bursts into bloom, and petals fill the air. <div>Wayward often goes to nature to escape from daily stress. This is not only a great inspiration for his photography; it also plays the leading role in this artwork. The character (bottom left) answers the call of adventure and looks over the hills. By working in layers from dark to light, Wayward obtains a depth that absorbs our attention. The dark electricity box breaks open, in a sense, and shows a forgotten world. The more we urbanize, the further away we are from our roots; Wayward reminds us of this. Pause for a moment when you come across this artwork on the street. Breathe and relax for a bit before moving on.</div>

<div>Tuch chose to illustrate a personal story with this artwork. He covered the entire surface of the electricity box with brain cells. Long strands of neurons seek each other out and make connections. From afar, everything seems normal, but move closer and a different story emerges. Small cracks in the neurons are filled with gold. The cracks represent the damaging effects Tuch experienced from when he fell into a coma. The filling of gold comes from the Japanese art of kintsugi, in which broken objects are repaired with gold; it is believed that the cracks make the object more beautiful. In the same way, Tuch believes that he is better off now, and that his experience is part of a new perspective on life.</div>

<div>Project for Mechelen Muurt 2.0<br><br>The 'Freebirds' once again play the leading role in the work. “These are figures that regularly appear in my murals,” says Vanhee. “They are figures with a human body, but with a bird's head. They stand for persons who are free in their heads. I deliberately chose ten figures. Just as many as the number of streets in the Oud Oefenplein district that were named after a bird. I keep my own style, but it still contains references to different types of birds, such as a stork.”&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>For the mural, the artist from Mechelen was inspired by the multiculturalism in the neighbourhood. “There is a lot of symbolism in the work,” he says. “The boat in the tree symbolizes the road people have traveled from their country of origin to here. The tree itself then stands for the new home base, in this case Mechelen. But it also symbolizes oxygen. It also contains many small references to Mechelen, the district and Morocco, such as the Sint-Romboutstoren and a tagine.”<br><br>---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------<br>In het werk spelen de ‘Freebirds’ opnieuw de hoofdrol. “Het zijn figuurtjes die regelmatig terugkeren in mijn muurschilderingen”, zegt Vanhee. “Het zijn figuren met een mensenlijf, maar met een vogelhoofd. Ze staan voor personen die vrij zijn in hun hoofd. Ik heb bewust voor tien figuurtjes gekozen. Net zoveel als het aantal straten dat in de wijk Oud Oefenplein vernoemd werd naar een vogel. Ik behoud wel mijn eigen stijl, maar toch zitten er verwijzingen in naar verschillende soorten vogels, zoals een ooievaar.”<br><br></div><div>Voor de <em>mural</em> liet de Mechelse kunstenaar zich inspireren door de multiculturaliteit in de wijk. “Er zit heel veel symboliek in het werk”, zegt hij. “De boot in de boom staat symbool voor de weg die mensen hebben afgelegd van hun land van herkomst naar hier. De boom zelf staat dan weer voor de nieuwe thuisbasis, in dit geval Mechelen. Maar hij staat ook symbool voor zuurstof. Verder zitten er veel kleine verwijzingen in naar Mechelen, de wijk en Marokko, zoals de Sint-Romboutstoren en een tajine.”<br><br></div>

<div>This artwork by the Belarusian artist Anita Familje brings out recognizable feelings. A woman is standing inside a dark room; and yet, her curls and clothes are bathed in a golden glow from the sun. She's trapped, isolated, just like the rest of the world during the many lockdowns over the last year. We want to open the window and go outside without feeling fear or possible danger. We are sometimes trapped not only physically, but also mentally. The artist knows this all too well; when she was married to an authoritarian husband, her own home was a prison cell. Like the character in the painting, she wanted to fly away and feel the winds of change. The butterfly pattern on the woman's clothing in this artwork symbolizes that inner urge for freedom.</div>

<div>GRAFRIFI's abstract work is a nod to his experience in the graffiti scene. The colors pop in an almost aggressive way, and the line work seems to jump off the electricity boxes. The rough stripes are placed with speed and precision. Sometimes they are wafer thin, sometimes they puff up into clouds of mist. <div>Don Janssens drew inspiration from one of the most famous themes of classical art: Vanitas, which focuses on the transience of life. On a personal level, the theme fits with Don's background as a graffiti artist. Graffiti is by nature ephemeral, as it is constantly erased and reapplied. Don followed a similar approach in his artwork, applying colors and building layer upon layer with a variety of tools: brush, aerosol, paint pens, and stencils.The whole piece has been given a substantively romantic tone. The characters come from images from the 1950s, a time characterized by a seemingly carefree spirit. The cheerful faces and bright colors are in stark contrast to the emotionally charged text and serious design.</div>

<div>The German artist Bianca Hinmüller&nbsp; uses her art as a form of activism. With this particular piece, she wants to remind us that we are all equal. The hands, each with a different skin color, frame a colorful heart. The puzzle pieces that are missing, signify how we are all part of a greater whole, and the way to move forward is to work together. The cloud of puzzle pieces symbolizes diversity. It is no coincidence that you will find this work next to the RADAR building, which is an organization committed to supporting creative talent and providing opportunities for people of all ages and different backgrounds. Here, people do not look at the differences, but atwhat they have in common. Something that Bianca wants to emphasize with her artwork.</div>

<div>Sander Peli's recent explorations using watercolors have influenced the style of this artwork. Since the lockdown started last year, he has been going out every day to document the ever-changing world. Seemingly trivial elements show their beauty when you give them attention; in a sense, you rediscover the city. Peli's penchant for Art Nouveau and Art Deco helped him choose the subject of this artwork. De Rode Schaar, the building standing across the street from the electricity box on which his artwork is painted, is one of the few Art Nouveau buildings in Mechelen, but it also holds a personal significance for him: his wife had her wedding dress made here. By working out some elements in detail and quickly depicting others, Peli points out the otherwise almost invisible beauties of his subject in an extremely effective way.</div>

A mile under the sea

Ice and Smiles

<div>Ice and Smiles do what they stand for: paint popsicles and put a smile on the faces of passers-by. You don't have to look for anything deeper here. Father and daughter join forces, and it is precisely this collaboration that shows the power of art.&nbsp; While they put effort into bringing others joy, they subconsciously grow closer to each other. This box is not their first artwork, and you can tell. The daughter puts together the color palette and they start with the sketch. <div>For the 2nd edition of Mechelen Muurt, Iota from Brussels was the only female artist.
<br>The only female artist and also the youngest artist is Iota (29). She realized her mural in the Donkerlei. “She painted a couple in a very serene way, underwater and above the tip of the iceberg. Her work symbolizes the merging of two different cultures that become a different entity”, Gijs explains. “Iota paints very poetically and softly. Her characters feel very fragile,” says Jonas.<br><br>------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------<br><br>Voor de 2de editie van Mechelen Muurt was de Brusselse Iota de enige vrouwelijke artiest.<br>De enige vrouwelijke artiest en meteen ook de jongste kunstenares is Iota (29). Zij realiseerde haar muurschildering in de Donkerlei. “Op een heel serene manier heeft zij een koppel geschilderd, onder water en boven het topje van de ijsberg. Haar werk staat symbool voor het versmelten van twee verschillende culturen die een andere entiteit worden”, legt Gijs uit. “Iota schildert heel poëtisch en zacht. Haar personages voelen heel fragiel aan”, zegt Jonas.</div>

Musée Muys

<div>Musée Muys likes to create tiny figurines. She uses them to make miniature dioramas that fit in your palm. Just for the sake of Chromana, she traded her tiny detail brushes for much larger ones and painted herself as a mouse (which is a play on her namesake, "muys") on an electrical box. The design is a nod to the lush, green "nest" in which she grew up. Spending much of her time in the garden, she had happy adventures and studied picture books about mice and other small characters. Today, she has cabinets full of beautiful children's books:<br>"Young characters continue to inspire me, because they take me back to the time when I made new discoveries every day.&nbsp; Maybe that's why I enjoy working with children so much. Wonder is a natural thing for them. It is a great honor for me to have the electrical cabinet near a school."</div>

<div>Represented by a secretarybird, the character in this piece by artist Lieven Hendrickx tackles the difficult subject that will sound familiar to any artist: finding the balance between the value of your artwork and making a living from it. To what lengths must an artist go to survive, and at what point do you ‘sell your soul’? While the artist is constantly weighing the issue, the whole world is watching. The shirt, covered with Instagram icons, symbolizes the world of social media. In addition to creating art, an artist these days also has to create content. How do you stand out and avoid drowning in a sea of noise? All of these questions weigh heavily on the artist. Despite the bright colors of the piece, you can feel the weight of the subject. Who said philosophical dilemmas couldn’t be colorful?</div>
