The 'Freebirds' once again play the leading role in the work. “These are figures that regularly appear in my murals,” says Vanhee. “They are figures with a human body, but with a bird's head. They stand for persons who are free in their heads. I deliberately chose ten figures. Just as many as the number of streets in the Oud Oefenplein district that were named after a bird. I keep my own style, but it still contains references to different types of birds, such as a stork.” 
 
For the mural, the artist from Mechelen was inspired by the multiculturalism in the neighbourhood. “There is a lot of symbolism in the work,” he says. “The boat in the tree symbolizes the road people have traveled from their country of origin to here. The tree itself then stands for the new home base, in this case Mechelen. But it also symbolizes oxygen. It also contains many small references to Mechelen, the district and Morocco, such as the Sint-Romboutstoren and a tagine.”

In het werk spelen de ‘Freebirds’ opnieuw de hoofdrol. “Het zijn figuurtjes die regelmatig terugkeren in mijn muurschilderingen”, zegt Vanhee. “Het zijn figuren met een mensenlijf, maar met een vogelhoofd. Ze staan voor personen die vrij zijn in hun hoofd. Ik heb bewust voor tien figuurtjes gekozen. Net zoveel als het aantal straten dat in de wijk Oud Oefenplein vernoemd werd naar een vogel. Ik behoud wel mijn eigen stijl, maar toch zitten er verwijzingen in naar verschillende soorten vogels, zoals een ooievaar.”

Voor de mural liet de Mechelse kunstenaar zich inspireren door de multiculturaliteit in de wijk. “Er zit heel veel symboliek in het werk”, zegt hij. “De boot in de boom staat symbool voor de weg die mensen hebben afgelegd van hun land van herkomst naar hier. De boom zelf staat dan weer voor de nieuwe thuisbasis, in dit geval Mechelen. Maar hij staat ook symbool voor zuurstof. Verder zitten er veel kleine verwijzingen in naar Mechelen, de wijk en Marokko, zoals de Sint-Romboutstoren en een tajine.”
