<div>The Thornton Heath Pond low wall mosaic commenced in 2019 and was part of pre-Covid pandemic ‘Our Green Mile’ project, linking The Thornton Heath Pond public green space roundabout to the West Croydon Railway Station energy garden and creating a green corridor.&nbsp; The mosaic in the oval low walled garden space brings back to life an environment, based on an artistic impression, of what life in a pond may look and feel like.&nbsp; Artist Grace Holliday @gracegholliday together with local people, created the design and worked over a number of weekends during 2019 to smash and place the tiles on the low wall. The work by volunteers was cut short by various lockdowns during the 2020 Coronavirus Pandemic. Whilst the Green Mile project discontinued, work on the TH Pond mosaic resumed during September 2021 when lockdown in England was lifted and volunteers felt safe to work together as a social group in the outdoors. Grouting, polishing the tiles and painting the borders continued apace to create a vibrant mosaic.<br>The Thornton Heath Pond low wall mosaic sits within a busy and major roundabout on the major A23 route out of South London heading down to the English south coast.&nbsp; It is well known amongst those participating in the annual November London Hyde Park to Brighton Veteran Car Run that celebrated its 125th edition in November 2021. The Pond provides a vantage point for veteran car run enthusiasts, onlookers, photographers.</div><div>Funded by Croydon Council 2019 via grants from ward budgets by West Thornton Ward local Councillors&nbsp;</div>

I was then stuck in the house for months then the death of George Floyd shook the world. I am not black, I am not white either. People rarely view me as a threat as I look little but it doesn’t mean I don’t experience racism or discrimination living in the UK. I felt pain when someone was knelt on the neck to death – the choking, trying to gasp the last breath and fighting for life. All life matters and for whatever reason, a death of a human being no matter what skin colour is not acceptable. Therefore, I painted HOPE NOT HATE.</div><div>David – my neighbour – a member of Thornton Heath Community Action Team @thornton_heath_c_a_t sat on the dirty pavement with me for days and we painted the mural together. Yashika and Vania brought me ice cream, N. gave me lunch and a coat. I don’t know why he decided I needed a coat but he did and I appreciate everyone who dropped by and gave me words of encouragement.</div><div>At 11am 20th June 2020, my friend Andrea Perry and I organised the <a href="https://freeart.org.uk/blm/">“Thornton Heath stands with Black Lives Matter”</a> demonstration on Ambassador House square. We had to put in a lot of safety measures with the council and the police in order for the event to go ahead but we received amazing support from our guest speakers, artists, local politicians, Age UK, Thornton Heath Community Action Team, our volunteers and local residents". <br>Commissioned by Croydon Council 2019 as part of the regeneration of Ambassador House Forecourt.</div>

<div>The 'Hope Lives Here' mural just behind the pedestrian entrance gate to Bensham Manor Allotments on Kynaston Road CR7 7AZ.&nbsp; It is a sub-set of Van Dang's 'Hope not Hate' set of wall murals in Thornton Heath.&nbsp; Van Dang mused "I was painting the front mural at Ambassador House, 1 Brigstock Road, CR7 7JG when the first Covid-19 lockdown struck the UK on 23rd March 2020. I was then stuck in the house for months then the death of George Floyd shook the world. I am not black, I am not white either. People rarely view me as a threat as I look little but it doesn’t mean I don’t experience racism or discrimination living in the UK." The 'Hope Lives Here' mural followed a set of key incidents in the artist's life in early 2020. Van Dang said "On 1st February 2020, I arranged to meet a group of friends to celebrate Lunar New Year in China Town London but one of my friends wondered should we cancel the meet up as there was a fatal virus spreading around China. I said we will be fine as we were living in one of the world’s most advance medical countries. 23rd March 2020, the world turned upside down. A neighbour of a friend who was in his 40s – a strong healthy man – passed away due to Covid19. Supermarket shelves were raided empty. People swirled around me anywhere I went and gave me really bad looks. I am Vietnamese so I look Chinese to everyone. Everyone was intense and then the first lockdown started. The world stood still.</div><div>There were no air planes in the sky. No traffic on the road. Central London was deserted. I didn’t know what this virus was? How did it spread? Why is it here? What do we do to stop it? I woke up every morning checking the death toll around the world. It was a very confusing time so I thought we needed a splash of colour and optimistism in our life. Therefore I painted 'Hope lives here' at the back alley of my house with the help of my son and the dog. The mural finished on Day 8 of lockdown 30th March 2020. People going to the allotment said it brings them smiles and I hope it will for many years to come."</div><div>&nbsp; &nbsp;</div>

<div>Roadside mosaic designed by Grace Holliday @gracegholliday of a summer cottage garden undertaken by residents of Frant Road as part of a Street Action Project by Thornton Heath Community Action Team (THCAT) @thornton_heath_c_a_t &nbsp; The wall space on Frant Road was provided by local business Roadside Windscreen Service. Residents were asked which plants and creatures, such as a well known cat, they wanted to include. The aim was to add colourful flowers to the street to deter fly tipping, giving it a more cared-for look and encouraging more planting. Many locals donated their crockery and tiles (as did local businesses) and got to know each other whilst working together to create the mosaic. Passers-by stopped constantly to thank the volunteers and praised the mosaic funded by a grant to THCAT from The People's Trust, 2019.&nbsp; <br>Photographer: Tilly Pollard @heartofthefirefly</div>

<div>Artist Bareface @bareface_art 'Dare to Dream' mural is the focal point of the Ambassador House Forecourt. Bareface who is a Digital illustrator, artist and printmaker, combines love for both Pop Art and Street Art to form Street Pop. The artist likes to reproduce, mix and merge familiar imagery to create a new perspective. The artist believes that when Art is re-purposed in this way, it can create an alternative and compelling story. Bareface says "Dare to Dream is a saying that is very close to my heart.&nbsp; It's stuck with me throughout my childhood and adult life here in Thornton Heath.&nbsp; This piece serves as a visual reminder that no matter your age, ethnicity or religion, you should never stop dreaming of things you want to achieve and accomplish in life. <div>In 2017, one of Thornton Heath’s local architects Conrad Cherniavsky led the Bensham Manor passage project and painted the footbridge over the railway line leading to and from Thornton Heath railway station which is just a stone’s throw away. The footbridge connected two roads separated by the railway tracks: Bensham Manor Road and Elm Road at its junction with Gillett Road and saved pedestrians valuable time accessing Thornton Heath High Street as well as school children heading to local schools.&nbsp; Sadly, the footbridge was vandalised with graffiti featuring racist swear words and sexual images and was neglected. The June 2019 re-painting from scratch project was led by artist Van Dang @freeartUK in collaboration with design artist <a href="http://www.vikoi.com/">Vikoi</a> @vikoi1&nbsp; <a href="https://www.vikoi.com/">https://www.vikoi.com/</a>&nbsp; The completed project saw the vandalised railway bridge immersed in fun underwater designs painted on by volunteers galvanised by Thornton Heath Community Action Team (THCAT) @thornton_heath_c_a_t&nbsp; It was named a NICE WALK TO SCHOOL for the children of Thornton Heath. <a href="https://freeart.org.uk/a-nice-walk-to-school/">https://freeart.org.uk/a-nice-walk-to-school/</a>&nbsp;</div><div>Artist Van Dang says: “Sometimes you start doing something and you think “s*** why did I do this!?!” It was my feeling the first morning we started painting Bensham Manor Road footbridge. A pile of vomit greeted us in the middle of the bridge where we were supposed to paint. It was raining and even though it was 12th June, the temperature was below 12 degrees. It was windy and the oil-based paint dripped and got blown everywhere.&nbsp;</div><div>The footbridge connects the 2 Croydon Council Local Wards of Thornton Heath and Bensham Manor.&nbsp; It has been a hot spot full of fly tipping, dog waste, occasionally human waste, broken glass, needles and rude graffiti. Many children use this bridge to go to Ecclesbourne and Whitehorse Manor primary schools and it was a disgrace. We couldn’t put up with it anymore so I asked my friend Marley “will you do it with me” and to my surprise she said “yes” (She kind of regretted it later on but well, it was too late).&nbsp;</div><div>We asked for funding from Thornton Heath Community Action Team (THCAT) and asked the Anti-graffiti team from Croydon Council to jet wash the bridge before we painted it. During the 2 weeks of painting, we had amazing support from local residents. Many of them I had never met before. Some dropped by and gave us boxes of chocolate. Some walked past, saw us hard at work and decided to come back later and help us.&nbsp;</div><div>I was nearly in tears and gave Graham big hugs as he had spent a full day in the cold scrubbing and painting. After 2 days helping me, my son and my husband were very pleased when I said this would be my last mural project ever (It isn’t). Marley nearly unfriended and blocked me (luckily, I know where she lives so she can’t run away from me… yet). Artist <a href="http://www.vikoi.com/">Vikoi</a> @vikoi1&nbsp; <a href="https://www.vikoi.com/">https://www.vikoi.com/</a> spent more than a day helping me sketch and outline the artworks. Chetna, Gaetane, Linda… and many more people came to lend a hand.</div><div>This is the worst pay job – £0 but the most rewarding and the best mural I have painted this year – 2019. I think for many years to come I will still remember this project and I hope the children enjoy their walk to school every morning now. Curtis is a highly experienced British artist, the son of a Jamaican father and White British mother. This mixed heritage is the basis of Curtis’s work and is integral to his aesthetic. He tells this mixed cultural story through the painting of botanicals and birdlife. His botanicals and birdlife are a mix of native and tropical species from the places of his parents’ birth. Showing the beauty when nature collaborates it can create powerful and awe-inspiring results. This mixture of cultures told in this way in the urban environment makes us all appreciate the true variety and beauty to be found in our diverse cultures. <div>In eight days local designer and artist Van Dang @freeartuk with the help of over 30 local people from Thornton Heath, painted the mural and transformed a dreary white wall into a colourful Thornton Heath feature with this beautifully designed peacock symbolising benevolence, patience, kindness, compassion and knowledge.&nbsp; Over one hundred people turned up to a workshop organised by Artist Van Dang at the Hindu Temple and 220 people voted online for their choice of three designs for the mural with the 'Peacock' artwork winning.&nbsp; <br>Commissioned by Croydon Council 2018<br><br></div>

<div>This mural celebrating tolerance and diversity in a proud and accepting multi-cultural community and neighbourhood is by Thornton Heath fashion designer Simon Carter<strong> @simoncarterltd</strong>&nbsp; The designer volunteered to design the mural to deter fly tipping at a "hot spot" as well as to bring neighbours together. Simon said “his design was inspired ‘by the values of our diverse community’. Norbury Brook, that runs through the middle of Thornton Heath, seemed a good symbol to show the life and vibrancy of our neighbourhood”.&nbsp; Residents and locals were galvanised by Thornton Heath Community Action Team (THCAT) thornton_heath_c_a_t&nbsp; They worked with local artist, Van Dang <strong>@freeartUK</strong>&nbsp;to create a mural that has the brook running through it and enjoyed getting together in the street for a chat and refreshments.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>The mural was funded by a grant to THCAT from The People’s Health Trust, 2018.</div>

Neighbourhood, Community and Home: Quadrant Road

<div>Roadside mosaic was designed by Brook Road residents with the assistance of artist Grace Holliday @gracegholliday. The Brook Road mosaic is part of the Thornton Heath Community Action Team (THCAT) @thornton_heath_c_a_t&nbsp; Street Action Project funded by The People's Health Trust. It was supported by THCAT volunteers by giving of their time. The aim was to improve the feel and look of Brook Road, helping to connect with neighbours and local businesses.&nbsp; Strong connections were created with business owners who supported the residents' aspirations by donating wall space on which the Brook Road Mosaic has been placed, a venue for smashing crockery and tiles and providing refreshments.&nbsp; The mosaic project created real community cohesion among the residents of the Brook Road and other local people who continue to work together to address issues in their neighbourhood.&nbsp; <br>Photographer: Tilly Pollard @heartofthefirefly</div>

<div>This portrait is by Ben Slow @benslow a London Based artist. Ben specialises in portraiture. His most famous mural is in Germany which is a mural of a couple who have lived in the building for 67 years they moved in there the day they were married. The work on the side of No. 1 Melfort Road, in Thornton Heath is actually of a child who lives on the street just down the road. His name is <strong>‘Mika’</strong> he was 5 when Ben painted it. Mike sees this mural every day on the way home from school still. <div>The work of local illustrator, Philip Dennis @philipdennis_art involves symbols and patterns inspired by imagery from the built environment and community in his home town of Thornton Heath. Philip created <strong>'Home Forms'</strong> after conducting a series of workshops where he used ‘observational drawing’ as the main technique. The artist then transformed drawings into bold, graphic forms and patterns, which used as direct inspiration for the design of the public artwork. <div>Thornton Heath High Street Mural Artworks&nbsp;</div><div>YOU&amp;ME @youandme_archi curated a series of Thornton Heath High Street mural artworks, working alongside local artists in Thornton Heath, as part of the Croydon Council High Street Shop Improvements and Public Realm project. Vacant flank walls along the High Street have been brought to life by artworks by artists Mat Pringle (Above No. 9 High Street), Philip Dennis (At No. 48 High Street), Ben Connors (Side Wall of No. 80 High Street) and Snapshot Collective. The four artists were selected via an open call and carried out a series of creative workshops with locals, facilitated by community engagement expert Daisy Froud, targeting different demographics of Thornton Heath to develop their designs. Some worked with specific groups such as young people, while others held activities open to all, from linocut printmaking, potato print patterns to photography walks and cartoon storyboarding. To ensure that the different artworks work together as a whole, YOU&amp;ME worked closely with the artists on the overall 'vision' and set briefs for their designs based on a series of themes derived from extensive community engagement and research into historical archives of the area. The final mural artworks are cohesive, yet diverse, using a variety of media including digitally printed tiles, lino print panels, photography and oversized in situ hand painting.<br>YOU&amp;ME Architecture also contributed their own artwork mural <strong>'Furniture Shop - at the junction of Gillett Road and Thornton Heath High Street' </strong>next to Floor Fashion furniture shop, incorporating the area's history and depicting a representative view of the former <strong>A.F. Bundle furniture shop</strong>. &nbsp; It was inspired by collected histories from local people and research from the archives.&nbsp; The mural is an illustration of a historic photo of the former A.F.Bundle furniture shop which was on this site and also on Whitehorse Road.&nbsp;<br>Commission by Croydon Council 2017</div>

<div>'<strong>A Thornton Heath Nature Trail'</strong> created by local artist, Mat Pringle @matpringle was inspired by the flora and fauna of Thornton Heath from the Albino squirrels of Grangewood Park to Kayla the eagle, which is also the mascot of Crystal Palace Football Club (CPFC) located in the nearby Selhurst Park.&nbsp; Mat's design drew on the community’s comments and knowledge of hidden nature and green space such as the Jerusalem artichokes growing in Thornton Heath Rec community garden.&nbsp; Following a printmaking workshop with the local community, the artist developed a series of linocut prints which were enlarged and painted onto the final panels for the mural. The painted leaves of the mural act as a simplified map of Thornton Heath and the locations of the plants and animals.
