<div>Our Porch Light program continued their partnership with the Kirkbride Center, an inpatient behavioral health facility in West Philadelphia, for this dramatic new mural from artist Eric Okdeh. The phrase “the only way out is through” speaks to the process of healing and gaining clarity, moving through a difficult time and coming out the other side.</div><div><em><br>The Only Way Out Is Through</em> is the culmination of several months of workshops at Kirkbride, co-led by Okdeh and social worker Harini Reddy. Together, the artist and participants developed a design that humanizes the struggle of people dealing with addiction, and shines a light on underlying traumas with an additional quote: “We matter. We shouldn’t let our past define us, nor should we shut the door on it. Our experience is what allows us to be helpful, it is our testimony.” The person in the artwork is shown under layers of water and pattern, with one hand emerging in full color to evoke a moment of clarity.</div>

<div>Done on July 16, 2014 - this mural is of a gramophone and the music played for the music venue, Union Transfer. The creators of this mural first explored the interior and took hundreds of pictures. They then drew over the photographs and pulled the drawings together create the design now shown. Most of the designs are purely decorative while others have embedded meaning like the abstract portrait of a face with an X right alongside the needle of the gramophone. Overall this mural shows the color music gives along with positive energy.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Completed: October 1, 2003<br><br>Sitting in the heart of the city, this mural was dedicated to the Eisenhower Fellowship's 50th anniversary and shows a learning tree. The artists noted that the leaves are "objects alluding to the breadth of human endeavor, knowledge, and perseverance." On the mural itself is a quote by Eisenhower - "only justice, fairness and cooperation can finally lead men to the dawn of eternal peace."&nbsp;</div>

<div>Muralists and design partners Phillip Adams and Jonathan Laidacker have created a mural that captures the feeling of excitement and anticipation that a fan feels on game day. The design illustrates the full experience of going to an Eagles game: the anticipatory travel to the stadium, the excitement of being part of the crowd, and the thrill of the game itself. This concept, tied together with strong Philadelphia iconography, including the Eagles stadium, Philadelphia skyline, players and fans, creates an image and project that inextricably links the Eagles with the city of Philadelphia.</div>

Gangs were a part of his life until attending University of Pennsylvania where he changes his life path.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Done on October 1, 2004 - this mural celebrates the African American poets' journey. The poets path starts with two women, one pouring water into the ground and the other playing an instrument. The winds then flow through the American cotton fields where blues and jazz musicians are playing. The journey continues into the present with a poetry reading. Within this mural are phrases from six different poets highlighting how important imagery and words are in a poets life.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Completed: 1983<br><br>This massive 15,000 sq ft mural was done in 1983. The artists skill, known for turning bare walls into illusory windows, created this mural as a tribute to the Philadelphia architecture and noted that he was fascinated by the contrast of the colonial era buildings next to skyscrapers. The mural contains the image of William Penn (to scale of the City Hall Statue!) going into repair, in reference to his portrait at city hall. And to the right sits the statue of Ben Franklin with a view of the B&amp;O rail station behind him. The view below is of a scull rower from Thomas Eakins' painting - "Max Schmitt in a Single Scull."</div>

Commissioned by local businesses with employees active in literacy programs, the goal was to show how struggle and hardship can still grow to success. The girl in the image is reaching for the sky where a towering tree is growing from the in bedding roots in her veins. Around her are ominous depictions of an abandoned car and boarded up home. This mural is a "visual homage to the notion of dreaming it and achieving it."&nbsp;</div>

The artist wanted to grasp the issue of violence and trauma among youths. The image depicts three kids on a boat on rough waters making their way to the light - showing no matter the struggle, stay strong and you'll survive.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Done on August 1, 2013 - this mural is the 5th and last in the Goldman properties series and dedicated to a legend in architecture and urban planning - Edmund Bacon. The abundant use of light colors, such as white and grey, help the beautiful portrait to stand out for blocks. In the mural, Bacon gazes down at those traveling the streets of the city that he helped drastically shape.</div>

The Father of Modern Philadelphia

<div>Completed: 2012<br><br>This mural was a collaboration with Social Impact Studios. It's based of the popular saying Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime." it depicts the value of hard work within a community. Each economy group throughout Philly's history is shown - agricultural, industrial, machine, and knowledge based - along with a strain glass piece and quotes within each. The fabric below is how these groups are connected, the "fabric of society" and how much we rely on all to survive. Looking closely you can also see that the fabric shows a story of its own.</div>

How We Fish

<div>Completed: 1999<br><br>Sponsored by the Philadelphia Reads Program, this mural shows a girls "expanding imagination through reading" while reading the words "and now i will unclasp a secret book" from the historic play - King Henry IV by Shakespeare. The message here the artist and the Philadelphia public library wanted to show is how rewarding and what a creative outlet reading can be.</div>

<div>Done on October 15th, 2009 - this mural&nbsp; was inspired by two very different locations, Lancaster PA and Perugia Italy. Create for Vetri Restorante by Jame Beard - the artist matched the idyllic vision as the chefs venue itself. The restaurant philosophy is "that a great good experience is all about the feelings and environment you are in at the time" and Northrup hopes for visits to "dive into the space and recall their own serendipitous and wonderful outdoor experience with food and friends."&nbsp;</div>

<div>Completed: 2005<br><br>This mural is a tribute to horses and rider of the present day moving through the old Philadelphia street. They used horses for their daily tasks - like haling milk and fruits. To create the design, the Cowboys and Cowgirls Association shared a collection of old photos with the painters of this mural. It depicts residents of the area and a Buffalo Solider from the old west. He represents the older generations who brought their skills and&nbsp; low for horses during their journey to the north and mentoring the youth.&nbsp;</div>

Tribute to Urban Horsemen

<div>Done on June 30th, 2004 - this mural is dedicated to Herman Wrice. He was a popular community organizer and creator of Wrice Process - where residents of the neighborhood directly confronted drug dealers in the area. His famous saying was "Up with hope. Down with Dope." He also created MAD or Mantua Against Drugs and led marches against the dealer to create a safer and drug free neighborhood. Now his son, Tony Wrice, helps carry on his father legacy.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Done on September 14, 2001 - this mural was created to show the social, industrial, and educational improvement for working woman by the New Century Guild. At the top is a depiction is Philadelphian - Eliza Turner. She was the founder of the group in 1882, who pioneered woman in the workforce efforts. She's wearing a mask due to the social pressures and dilemmas woman had faced in their progress. Very lightly, the mural has the words "Equal jobs and Education opportunities".&nbsp;</div>

<div>Done on June 20th 2011, this mural is considered the entrance to Brewerytown on Girard Ave and depicts what makes this North Philadelphia neighborhood great. You see a sun shining down on the iconic trolley, college, and Girard Ave architecture. This wall was chosen because its the gateway to the street of shops and restaurants. The design of the mural was done throughout resident meetings to see what they wanted shown on the wall since its in tribute to those living in the community. Fun Fact, Jane Golden's favorite part is the sun!</div>

<div>Philadelphia is home to over 1.5 million people. All who live, work, and coexist Seamlessly. Often we forget or overlook the animals that also call this city home. "Local Critters" is a series of murals depicting these animals. The juxtaposition of painting these smaller inhabitants on such a large scale acts as a playful way to raise awareness of their presence in our environment.<br><br></div><div>Animals have no political or religious ties, and the personification of such interesting creatures beautifully conveys what the "city of brotherly love" can call each other, neighbor.</div>

<div>Completed: September 17, 2009<br><br>This 38 ft mural pictures Lady Justice's statue in pieces with legal giants like attorney Clarence Darrow and former US Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall - alongside Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Hamilton, and Louis Dembitz Brandeis. This one caused a lot of controversy and was considered very inappropriate for such an upscale neighborhood by its residents. However, the commissioner Paul Rosen, on behalf of his law firms charity, did not give up. After a year of protests and arguments the mural was installed.&nbsp;</div>

The Atlas of Tomorrow

<div>Completed: May 1, 1997<br><br>This mural has become one of the most iconic in the city. This piece depicts modern day youths and their imitated postures of historical figures. Except for one - the young girl at the top with the pink blouse. She stands along with no figure to mirror. She is Tameka Jones and was a student at the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts. With grace and composure, she stands looking out past the mural in contemplation towards the streets below.&nbsp;</div>

Common Threads

<div>Done in 2008 - this mural honors W.E.B. Du Bois and Engine #11. Du Bois was a Harvard graduate who was a civilian rights activist and author. In this piece, it shows his work with Philadelphia's 7th Ward where he surveyed blacks living in the area in 1899, a census at the time. The location of this one is where one of the original 22 fire companies wereestablished in 1871 - and #11 became the African American firehouse in 1952.&nbsp;</div>

It's depicts how African Americans culture needed to be woven into the American lifestyle - showing this by those helping to build the statue. Above is a quote for Lincoln's second inaugural address - "With malice toward none, with charity for all."</div>

A People's Progression Toward Equality

<div>Done in 2006 - this mural was inspired by the movie and book "Pay it forward" by Catherine Ryan Hyde. Sarantitis used this inspiration to recognize historical figures who have, in the truest way, paid it forward - like MLK pictured in the center and Harriet Tubman in the upper left. Also, this painting was one of the first to experiment with "build outs" or extensions with wood/metal to allow murals to push past the boundaries of just the walls. From the artist "it's really about today's young generation gaining from history, from their ancestors - the idea of giving something that's been given to you. it's kind of simple in the intent to have her have the strength to lead her community, and find that strength from people from the past."&nbsp;</div>

Defending our Honor

<div>Completed: November 15, 2015<br><br>This mural was inspired by President Obama's nationwide My Brother's Keeper Community Challenge, a new initiative to encourage communication for males of color. The artist worked with EMOC and DBHMS to make this not just a beautiful piece of art but to inspire and give viewers hope by displaying the positive words surrounding the face - like "love" "proud" "truth" and "strong willed." This project, along with others the city took into action, has helped raise awareness of males of color trying to gain access to education/employment and increased access to education/employment and increased access to behavior health services.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Done on October 30, 2005 - this mural celebrates the force behind the Dixie hummingbirds who pioneered modern gospel music. This one is located by the Met, where they often preformed. Starting in 1928, a group of neighborhood friends became one of the most successful groups of their time, who then moved to Philly in 1942. This mural is in tribute to their inspiring sound.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Done on October 1, 2016 - this is the third mural in the series done by the artist in the city. This one specifically, as noted by the artist - "the mural design and idea was through that machinery, to the curtains and drapery, to the fabric, to the tree, more as a symbolism, showcasing these hidden gems of history that have evolved and both of these speak to much for the urban fabric." The art depicts the historic use of the building and how its adopted to modern day - from creating tarps for wagons, for sailboats - into a thriving artists/business owners space.</div>

<div>Done in 2015 - this mural depicts the speech MLK made at this very intersection in 1965. Attracting more then 10,000 Philadelphians, this was one of this stops of his Freedom Now Rally. The Harvest Field

<div>Done on January 1, 2016 - this large mural measuring at 10,000 sq ft depicts the work of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas's to end slavery with the symbols on the child's shirt, African map to the left, and the American flag throughout. The young girl holding the orb has a woman rising from blue flames - she represents the young girl as a grown up and the ancestors who survived the holocaust who changes the lives of many that impact us to this day.&nbsp;</div>

Legacy

<div>Done on January 20th, 2005 - this mural was created to raise awareness and support those affected by a disease that is called "the cancer that whispers" - sponsored by the Sandy Rollman Foundation, this is the first mural in the US to raise cancer awareness. This is a tribute to Rollman (pictured as the woman in green with a candle on a cliff), who passed away from advanced ovarian cancer at 33. Those depicted on the sides are woman helping women in struggle, while the 3 woman in the middle show hope and survivors. If you can spot it, there's also a little secret the artist notes - there's a figure in the cliff of a woman really in struggle and show how far cancer can go.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Extending a mural that was completed over a decade ago on the facade of Congreso de Latinos Unidos, Michelle Ortiz has been working with students at Kensington CAPA and Edison/Fareira High School to create a new project called “Power of Positivity”. This project focuses on maintaining a positive outlook in the face of adversity and conflict. Ortiz led conversations and workshops with students focusing on eliciting the positive components of the problems we face. Many students participating in the project are forced to navigate neighborhood drug trafficking on their way to and from school. This problem, combined with the other issues plaguing low-income communities, and the recent nationwide awareness of police brutality in communities of color creates a climate difficult for young people to learn and grow. Through intentional conversations, mindfulness workshops,and art-making, Ortiz channeled students’ concerns into the mural. She had the youth concentrate on what they celebrate in their lives rather than what adversely affects them. This shift in thinking has allowed students to better understand the complexities of life and how to have agency in the choices they make. The mural also celebrates Congreso’s longstanding presence in North Philadelphia as haven, and a place to learn and grow.</div>

This piece of art is make up of text by Johnston and students from St. Gabriel's Hall (a residential treatment center for adjudicated male youths) about what Tanner's life and work meant to them. This struggling African American artist that went unrecognized for his art is now getting the recognition and praise he deserves.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Done on August 1, 2014 - this mural tells the story of our history, residents, and city . Rowing has always played a major role within Philadelphia. The artist wanted to show the change in rowing throughout history - with the infamous boathouse row as the back drop. You see 4 rowers each from different periods of time, with the same goal - to win the race.</div>

Through classroom, and on-site interventions with professional artists, youth learn the theory and application of these design elements.</div>

<div>Done on September 19th, 2016 - this mural is made up of 6000 photographs to those who used #mappingfreire. This project is a first for the program who used multimedia as its platform and was done by the Freire Charter School teachers, students, and Marcus Balum - the artist and NextFab members printed all the photos. The year long collaboration was meant to depict how students and Philadelphian's navigated the city.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Done on June 30, 2005 - this hidden mural unfortunately doesn't have much behind it. However, the beautiful painting works in conjunction with another mural across the street to act as a "book end" frame as the entrance to north Patton St.&nbsp;</div>

<div>This mural is a recreation done by the artist after the original was destroyed in a fire on November 11, 2016. It was commissioned by the Community Wellness Project in order to raise awareness for mental and emotional health. The mural depicts an Enso Circle - a type of active meditation, along with images of natural elements by locals. Now just along the mural is a restaurant that extends the mural onto the wall.&nbsp;</div>

Sanctuary

<div>Completed: May 16, 2003<br><br>This mural was created for the William Way Center - the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community center for the city. It shows a depiction of a gay pride festival in front of notable landmarks - like the Drake Hotel. Not only does it show the celebration of the progress but the struggle - on the far left is a man holding a poster from the gay right march in 1966. The artist and her team of 15 artists noted that 'one of the wonderful hings about working on the mural was the people who came by daily to give their appreciation and support."</div>

<div>From their Facebook Page:&nbsp;<br>Located underneath the Market/Frankford Line (The El) in Philadelphia's Fishtown neighborhood, this rotating collection of murals aims to brighten up the Front St corridor.<br><br></div><div>The walls also serve as an outlet for many of Philadelphia's street artists to submit designs and legally display their work on a large, urban canvas.
