StudioZEPA's purposefully counter intuitive use of colour often disguises their subject matter in abstract forms. Inspired by cubism and fauvism, their colour application has become representative of more than diversity of cultures, but of beliefs, stereotypes, paradigms, as well as attempting to unify humans though a stained glass-esque lens. Their patterns play with how certain colours interact with each other, and the eye. From a distance colours mix and up close the eye over compensates creating optical illusions or glitches. The shapes are often inspired the movements and feeling used to create graffiti lettering, emphasizing flow and form. Preferring to work free hand, the duo combines vivid colours with detailed, illustrative line work, and spray paint techniques resulting in powerful and unique artworks. Combining these all these elements symbolizes the diversity, and complexity, of todays society. StudioZEPA comprises of ZestaOnline and Page33. Before meeting they were both interested in graffiti and mural art. ZestaOnline began with graffiti in 2000, focused on lettering which evolved to characters and then realism. Page33 studied fine art, fashion and dance. She was working at one of South Africa's most prestigious galleries when they met in Johannesburg, in 2011. Having worked in South Africa successfully as full time artists for many years they wanted to develop further to grow and develop their art, they realized it was necessary to relocate to participate in a much larger community to do so. Now based in The Netherlands and they travel around the world to produce and share their artworks.
