"1,2,3 today, 4,5,6 tomorrow"

Acrylic and spray-paint, 2023.

Part of The Artist Way Initiative in Praia. Since the mural was going to be painted on a school we felt a fun and light hearted approach would be best.
Early in the trip we photographed a young girl drawing a game on the floor, great because we wanted our artwork to include people from the direct area. This picture quickly became the center piece of our concept. The rest seemed to flow into place.

The painting depicts the young girl drawing the game, Hopscotch/ Hinkelen, on the ground.
The sequencing of the game is symbolic of how today's actions impact tomorrow's reality, as well as our kids and future generations.
In the beginning of the game we see a littered environment, by the end we see a thriving and prosperous natural environment. Combined it also suggests the improvement will be achieved step by step.

Some folks are comfortable complaining about pollution, yet quickly turn to litter the ground. Should we all try 'be the change we want to see', so to speak?
Either way, this piece is about creating some of that awareness.
