Leerlingen inspireren reusachtige muurschildering over sociaal Europa op Campus Redingenhof in Leuven. Dit werk is het vijfde in een reeks van zeven muurschilderingen in verschillende Belgische steden, en komt er op initiatief van de Europese Commissie. Inspiratie kwam van een twintigtal gemotiveerde jongeren die schoollopen op de campus zelf.

De enorme muurschildering – 180 vierkante meter – met als thema “sociaal Europa” siert een markante gevel van één van de schoolgebouwen die uitgeeft op een parking aan de campus, die meer dan 1300 leerlingen en ongeveer 300 personeelsleden met elkaar verbindt tot eenzelfde gemeenschap.

De Spaanse ontwerper en muurschilder Sokram maakte met zijn schildering een krachtige synthese van de verschillende ideeën van de jongeren, met als voornaamste figuratief element handen – in hout en in steen, met een knipoog naar de technische vaardigheden die sommige leerlingen op de campus aanleren – als symbool voor samenwerking, verbinding en kracht om dingen in beweging te zetten, en vooruit te doen gaan, trekken als ze doen aan hetzelfde zeel. De blauwe achtergrond met gele sterren erop refereert aan de Europese vlag, maar wordt naast de sterren ook gesierd door geometrische figuurtjes, driehoekjes en dodecaëders, die naar de schoolcontext verwijzen.

De muurschildering is de vijfde in de reeks van het project #EuropeStreetArt, dat de Europese Commissie opstartte ter gelegenheid van het Belgische voorzitterschap van de Raad van de EU en in de context van de Europese verkiezingen, en kreeg financiële steun van de Europese Commissie.

Students inspire giant mural about social Europe on Campus Redingenhof in Leuven. This work is the fifth in a series of seven murals in various Belgian cities, and was initiated by the European Commission. Inspiration came from twenty motivated young people who attend school on the campus itself.

The enormous mural – 180 square meters – with the theme “social Europe” adorns a striking facade of one of the school buildings that overlooks a parking lot on the campus, which connects more than 1,300 students and approximately 300 staff members to form a single community.

Spanish designer and muralist Sokram created a powerful synthesis of the different ideas of the young people with his painting, with the main figurative element being hands – in wood and stone, with a nod to the technical skills that some students learn on campus – as a symbol of cooperation, connection and the power to set things in motion and to move forward, pulling together as they do. The blue background with yellow stars on it refers to the European flag, but in addition to the stars, it is also decorated with geometric figures, triangles and dodecahedrons, which refer to the school context.

The mural is the fifth in the series of the #EuropeStreetArt project, which the European Commission launched on the occasion of the Belgian presidency of the Council of the EU and in the context of the European elections, and received financial support from the European Commission.
