L'idée de cette fresque murale est née lors d'un atelier interactif auquel ont participé une trentaine d'habitants de tous âges. L'objectif était de traduire visuellement leurs principales préoccupations : la préservation du cadre de vie ardennais et la protection de la biodiversité au niveau européen. La contribution des jeunes a été particulièrement déterminante, avec une vision clairement tournée vers l'avenir où la nature occupe une place centrale au sein de la citoyenneté européenne.

Sam Billen, directeur artistique chez Treepack, a rassemblé ces idées dans cette fresque murale. Au centre de l’œuvre se trouve un enfant tenant un dessin devant son visage. Sur ce dessin, qui reprend le motif de la couronne d’étoiles européenne, on peut voir un paysage reconnaissable : deux personnes naviguent sur l’Ourthe dans une barque traditionnelle. Des références subtiles aux ateliers sont disséminées sur la fresque : une colombe (symbole de la paix garantie par l’UE), des papillons en signe de biodiversité et un vélo représentant la mobilité douce. Ensemble, ces éléments ancrent clairement l’œuvre dans la vie quotidienne des habitants.

Het idee voor deze muurschildering ontstond tijdens een interactieve workshop waaraan een dertigtal inwoners van alle leeftijden deelnamen. Het doel was om hun belangrijkste bezorgdheden visueel weer te geven: het behoud van de Ardense leefomgeving en de bescherming van biodiversiteit op Europees niveau. De bijdrage van jongeren was bijzonder bepalend, met een duidelijke toekomstgerichte visie waarin natuur centraal staat binnen het Europese burgerschap.

Sam Billen, artistiek directeur bij Treepack, heeft die ideeën samengebracht in deze mural. Centraal in het werk staat een kind dat een tekening voor zijn gezicht houdt. Op die tekening, die het Europese sterrenkransmotief overneemt, is een herkenbaar landschap te zien: twee personen varen op de Ourthe in een traditionele bètchète boot. Verspreid over de muurschildering zijn subtiele verwijzingen naar de workshops aangebracht: een duif (symbool voor de vrede die de EU waarborgt), vlinders als teken van biodiversiteit en een fiets die zachte mobiliteit verbeeldt. Samen geven deze elementen het werk een duidelijke verankering in het dagelijkse leven van de inwoners.

Het project is een onderdeel van het #EuropeStreetArt project van de Europese Commissie. In België werden al meerdere werken van het #EuropeStreetArt project onthuld. Je kan alle werken hier bekijken.

The idea for this mural emerged during an interactive workshop attended by around thirty local residents of all ages. The aim was to visually represent their key concerns: preserving the Ardennes environment and protecting biodiversity at European level. The contribution of young people was particularly influential, offering a clear, forward-looking vision in which nature plays a central role within European citizenship.

Sam Billen, artistic director at Treepack, has brought these ideas together in this mural. At the centre of the work is a child holding a drawing in front of their face. The drawing, which incorporates the European star-and-crown motif, depicts a recognisable landscape: two people sailing on the Ourthe in a traditional bètchète boat. Subtle references to the workshops are scattered throughout the mural: a dove (symbolising the peace guaranteed by the EU), butterflies as a sign of biodiversity, and a bicycle representing soft mobility. Together, these elements give the work a clear connection to the daily lives of local residents.
