Writer's Block x Groninger Museum: MickLaRock
As part of the Museum Murals project, she brought her unique abstract style to the Montessori Vaklyceum in Groningen. Mick La Rock is one of Europe’s first and best-known female graffiti artists. She became part of the legendary New York graffiti scene, painting alongside icons like Lady Pink, Blade, and Sach. From the 2000s onwards, her work evolved from classic graffiti lettering to more abstract forms, inspired by brutalist architecture and minimalist art and typography.
About the Mural: Artist Mick La Rock (Aileen Middel) drew inspiration for this mural from the Groninger Museum’s 150th anniversary, specifically from the iconic staircases in both museum buildings. The mural is painted on the side of a building belonging to the Vaklyceum Montessori. Here, students must ascend and descend the stairs in the school building every day, reaching what is important to them: knowledge and discovery. A school, comparable to a museum, is a place brimming with knowledge, offering opportunities for discovery and broadening horizons.
In her design, Mick created this connection between the museum stairs leading to art and culture and the everyday school stairs that guide students to a wealth of knowledge.
This mural is part of the Museum Murals project: 20 museums, 20 murals. Writer's Block realized the mural in collaboration with the Groninger Museum.
