The Beautiful Suburban Bubble

The undulating suburb provides a gateway to the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges, creating a link between the rural and suburban landscapes. This is an important part of Lilydale’s dynamic identity as a place at the edge of suburbia yet surrounded by nature, allowing it to provide a diverse offering of experiences and opportunities.

The Eastern Rosella flies across Lillydale Lake heading towards the peak of Mount Dandenong, while a young girl blows bubbles, a symbol for youthful innocence, peacefulness and joy. The bubbles represent freedom, exploration, and the excitement of adventuring through Lilydale’s iconic bush trails and the urban offerings of cafes and retail. At the same time, the bubbles also represent silent contemplation, travelling lightly over this stunning landscape, leaving little impact. They travel upwards, seeming to disappear into the blue sky behind the building and across the road, inviting the viewer to gaze beyond the mural, taking it in as a part of the broader view.

Vibrant, fresh, and bold, the native botanicals, including the local Bossiaea Prostrata Pea Flower and Banksia Integrifolia, have been included to pay homage to the local flora. At mural scale, these flowers tower over the viewers; making a statement about the importance of Lilydale’s unique flora and fauna, whilst also framing the perspective of our impact on and within the environment.
