<div>Artist Combolution made a playing card with the kings Charlemagne and Frederik Barbarossa on it. For their portraits he was inspired by (almost) contemporary images. We know of Charlemagne that he was exceptionally tall for the time in which he lived; recent research states that he must have been between 1.79 and 1.92 meters tall. In contrast to historical reality, Charlemagne is often depicted with a full beard - however, this only later became a sign of royal dignity. It is much more likely that Karel wore a so-called Gallic drooping moustache. We know a little more about Frederik's appearance. His nickname "Barbarossa" ("Redbeard") refers to the ruddy color that adorned his beard.<br><br>Charlemagne had a palace built on the Valkhof Hill in 777. We don't know what this small palace looked like. It was set on fire in 882 by Vikings who had sailed up the Waal. The Viking boat next to the portrait of Charlemagne has been further elaborated under the roof. The Vikings led by Godfried de Noorman had spent the winter of 881 there. Karel's successors failed to drive the Vikings out of Nijmegen and eventually guaranteed them a safe retreat. Later, Godfried even received Frisia (area on the Dutch and Frisian coast) from the emperor. It was the only way to keep the Vikings quiet.<br><br>In 1155, Barbarossa rebuilt Charlemagne's palace and added even more. A number of still existing buildings, such as the Sint Nicolaas chapel, were incorporated into this structure. The result was the famous Valkhof castle, which can be seen in many early modern paintings of Nijmegen. The castle disappeared from the skyline of the city at the end of the 18th century. The castle, which had already fallen into disrepair, was demolished and sold as building material. The only remaining building from the time of Barbarossa is the so-called Barbarossa Ruin. The reuse of Roman columns in this structure shows that kings such as Charles and Barbarossa still aligned themselves with the Romans.</div>

<div>From castle to city<br>After Charlemagne and Frederik Barbarossa, the German king Henry VII is without doubt the most important ruler in Nijmegen's medieval history. Hendrik's life was not too happy; he rose to power as a child, often quarreled with his father throughout his reign, and eventually died after years of imprisonment as a result of a fall from his horse. This last event appealed most to the imagination of artist Sander Dolstra, who portrayed the king on the wall entirely according to the descriptions of his contemporaries: as a tall, handsome man with blond hair and a red moustache. The flying falcons can be seen in the background; the king was a falcon hunter like his father.<br><br>The city of Nijmegen was lucky with Hendrik. In 1230 he granted Nijmegen city rights. This gave the city the same privileges as other cities in the German Empire. This also included the right to carry a double-headed eagle on the city coat of arms. This powerful symbol can be seen on the chest of the horse.<br><br>Not long after the death of Henry VII in 1242, however, the city of Nijmegen came under Gelderland rule. In 1247 Count William II of Holland was chosen as the new king of the German Empire. However, the wars and election campaign that preceded this had cost Willem a lot of money. That is why he borrowed 10,000 silver marks from Count Otto II of Guelders, a huge amount at the time. As security for the repayment of the loan, William II, as German king, gave the city of Nijmegen as collateral to the Count of Guelders. In principle, the German kings could get the city back by paying off the loan. However, this never happened, so that from 1247 Nijmegen belonged to the county of Guelders. This event is referenced with the key to the city in Otto's hand.<br><br>We don't know exactly what Otto looked like. Artist Sander Dolstra therefore chose to depict his helmet. Otto was only too happy to show that Otto was a tough knight. To the right of the helmet is a seal on which the duke was depicted on horseback.</div>

<div>From practice march to world run<br>The history of the Nijmegen Four Days Marches begins in 1909. The (mainly military) participants in the four-day distance marches (with various starting points in the Netherlands) organized by the Royal Dutch Association for Physical Education (KNBLO) spent the night in the Prins Hendrik barracks in Nijmegen. Instead of the usual brown beans with bacon, they got a three-course menu, which consisted of soup, an AVG and a dessert. This hospitality was rewarded and the walkers returned to Nijmegen again and again in the following years. In 1925, the city definitively became the starting point of the Four Days Marches.<br><br>The number of participants increases over the years: in 1925, 766 people sign up for the walking tour; in 2019 there are 44,702. The group of walkers is also becoming more diverse, although it is not until 1919 that the first woman successfully completes the Four Days Marches. After this, women are no longer a rare sight; female walking clubs (such as the Blauwvosjes) simply cover the distance in their heel shoes. Due to the arrival of the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928, international walkers are also participating for the first time that year. At that time only a handful of countries were represented, nowadays there are about seventy per edition.<br><br>The Waalpainting unites the past and present of this unique walking event. The boxes symbolize the early years of the Four Days Marches; the globe refers to the international character that the Four Days Marches now have. The flag of the Four Days Marches waves in the background. This green flag with an orange cross was adopted in 1909 from the KNBLO. Of course there is also a prominent role for the gladiolus. Hikers receive this flower when they have survived the trip; just as gladiators in Roman times were buried under gladiolus when they defeated their opponent. Finally, there are also twelve titles of music songs about walking to be found in the globe. Can you find them all?</div>

<br>This all happens on the initiative of the municipality of Nijmegen, entrepreneurs and local residents. They hope to make not only this dark entertainment alley, but also the immediate environment a livable place again. Commissioned by the municipality, Bureau STIPO from Rotterdam is initiating the improvement. It therefore hired the Dutch artist Matthew May, who specializes in 3D street art.</div>
