Join us on a street art tour through Bremen's Viertel and discover the diversity of Bremen's urban art, from classic graffiti to murals, street art pieces and art in public spaces
In all cities, there are certain neighbourhoods that are said to be a must-see. In Bremen there is ‘The Quarter’. A few minutes from the city centre, between the two districts of Ostertor and Steintor, the streets merge to form an urban quarter that the people of Bremen affectionately and directly call the Viertel. In fact, the name describes pretty much exactly that: a neighbourhood that is perceived as a district more by its urban atmosphere and the small-scale nature of its streets and buildings than by a clear geographical boundary. No one probably knows exactly where the neighbourhood begins and where it ends. Everyone feels it. In addition to pubs, bars and small restaurants, there is one thing above all else in the district: lots of colourful walls and plenty of street art. If you walk through the neighbourhood, you have to close your eyes tightly to avoid seeing graffiti and street art.
This is exactly what makes Bremen a ‘street art city’ and at the same time so worthwhile. While in other cities it's mostly about the number of large murals and the big names of the international urban art scene, Bremen is about a different quality. In Bremen, countless hidden street art pleasures meet lots of good classic graffiti, site-specific murals and art in public spaces that was already there when the term urban art didn't even exist, but at the same time blends in perfectly. In Bremen, the boundaries between graffiti, urban art and art in public spaces seem to be fluid.
