The "Bananensprayer" (Banana Sprayer) is the famous pseudonym of Thomas Baumgärtel (born 1960 in Rheinberg), one of Germany's most iconic and politically charged pioneers of street art and pochoir (stencil) graffiti. He is universally famous for spraying his signature stencil banana at the entrances of important museums and galleries around the world. Today, over 4,000 art spaces worldwide — including the MoMA and Guggenheim in New York, Tate Modern in London, and Russia's Hermitage — bear his banana, where it serves as the unofficial, cult "Michelin star" or seal of quality for the global art scene.
