Mural created for Trotse Muren (Proud Walls).

The theme of this wall is “Enjoying the water”, which is clearly reflected in both the mural and the poem.
This impressive mural is located on the James Last Flat in the Holtenbroek district and was created in 2023 by Stichting Trotse Muren (Proud Walls Foundation). Artist Nina Valkhoff was inspired by the local nature. Among other things, a kingfisher, a beaver and a snake's head fritillary can be found in the artwork. Animals and plants that are typical of the Zwolle’s nature along the Zwarte Water. The design reflects the connection between humans and nature.
A special detail of the artwork is the poem, written by former city poet Sarah Lucassen in collaboration with local residents. The poem expresses pride in the neighbourhood and calls for everyone to cherish their individuality and see each other with an eye for detail.
The project began with lively gatherings in the flat's community room, where local residents painted, drew and talked about their neighbourhood together. The artistic expression created a sense of togetherness among people from diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences, making the local residents feel closely connected to the mural as a shared asset.

Artist Nina Valkhoff is a renowned muralist from Rotterdam. Her artworks adorn not only the Netherlands, but also countries such as Sweden, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Argentina, Portugal, Mexico, France, Curaçao and Ireland. What makes her art so unique is her dedication to covering walls with vibrant depictions of plants and animals, with a particular focus on endangered species. Muurschildering gemaakt voor Trotse Muren.

Het thema van deze muur is “Genieten aan het water”. In zowel de muurschildering als het gedicht komt dit thema duidelijk terug.
Deze indrukwekkende muurschildering staat op de James Last Flat in de wijk Holtenbroek en is in 2023 tot stand gekomen via Stichting Trotse Muren. Kunstenares Nina Valkhoff liet zich inspireren door de lokale natuur. Onder andere een ijsvogel, een bever en een kievitsbloem zijn terug te vinden in het kunstwerk. Dieren en planten die typisch zijn voor de Zwolse natuur langs het Zwarte Water. Het ontwerp weerspiegelt de verbondenheid tussen mens en natuur.
Een bijzonder detail van het kunstwerk is het gedicht, geschreven door ex-stadsdichter Sarah Lucassen in samenwerking met buurtbewoners. Het gedicht straalt trots uit voor de wijk en roept op tot het koesteren van ieders eigenheid en elkaar met oog voor detail te zien.
Het project begon met levendige bijeenkomsten in de buurtkamer van de flat, waar buurtbewoners gezamenlijk schilderden, tekenden en spraken over hun wijk. De kunstuiting heeft een gevoel van saamhorigheid gecreëerd tussen mensen met diverse culturele achtergronden en ervaringen, waardoor de buurtbewoners zich nauw verbonden voelen met de muurschildering als een gezamenlijk bezit.

Haar kunstwerken sieren niet alleen Nederland, maar ook landen als Zweden, Italië, België, Zwitserland, Argentinië, Portugal, Mexico, Frankrijk, Curaçao en Ierland.
