‘De boerenzwaluw is het hoofdpersonage van deze mural aan de buurttuin Ham. Het is een vogel met veel betekenis, zo staat hij onder andere symbool voor migratie. Ik woon in Casablanca, en voor dit werk zocht ik uit welke vogels de trektocht tussen Marokko en Gent maken. De boerenzwaluw is er daar één van.

Op de achtergrond herken je links, in de geometrische figuren, Gent. Rechts zie je golvende vormen die verwijzen naar mijn thuisland. De zwaluwen vliegen niet in één richting, ze bewegen altijd heen en weer.

Migratie is een thema dat me erg interesseert. De kleur van je huid of het land waar je vandaan komt, kan mee bepalen hoe mensen naar je verhuizing kijken. Reis je van het zuiden naar het noorden, dan ben je een immigrant. Ga je van het noorden naar het zuiden, dan noemen ze je een expat.

Ik ben niet de eerste die met zwaluwen werkt. Je ziet ze bijvoorbeeld vaak bij zeemannen, die ze laten tatoeëren nadat ze 5.000 mijl op zee hebben afgelegd. Het zijn speelse vogels: ze komen dichtbij en nemen daarna weer afstand. Dat herken ik als straatkunstenaar. We werken dicht op de muur, maar nemen ook afstand om het geheel te zien.

Ik hou van de impact van muurschilderingen. Ze zijn zichtbaar en laagdrempelig: je hoeft geen museumticket te kopen of je op te kleden om ze te bekijken. Een mural brengt kunst in het dagelijkse leven.

Ik werk overal ter wereld en betrek vaak buurtbewoners bij mijn werk. Door samen te schilderen wordt een muurschildering niet alleen iets voor de buurt, maar echt van de buurt. Babette schilderde een stukje van de achtergrond, iets wat ik zelf ook had willen doen toen ik jong was. Ik hoop dat deze muur haar en anderen kan inspireren.’

"The barn swallow is the main character of this mural at the Ham community garden. It is a bird with great significance; among other things, it symbolizes migration. I live in Casablanca, and for this work, I researched which birds make the migration between Morocco and Ghent. The barn swallow is one of them.

In the background, on the left, you can recognize Ghent in the geometric figures. On the right, you see undulating shapes that refer to my homeland. The swallows do not fly in a single direction; they are always moving back and forth.

Migration is a theme that interests me greatly. The color of your skin or the country you come from can help determine how people view your move. If you travel from the south to the north, you are an immigrant. If you go from the north to the south, they call you an expat.

I am not the first to work with swallows. You often see them, for example, on sailors, who have them tattooed after traveling 5,000 miles at sea. They are playful birds: they come close and then move away again. I recognize that as a street artist. We work close to the wall, but also step back to see the whole picture.

I love the impact of murals. They are visible and accessible: you don't have to buy a museum ticket or dress up to view them. A mural brings art into everyday life.

I work all over the world and often involve local residents in my work. By painting together, a mural becomes not just something for the neighborhood, but truly of the neighborhood. Babette painted a piece of the background, something I would have liked to do myself when I was young. I hope this wall can inspire her and others.’"
