Muurschildering van een toonaangevende artiest uit de Limburgse street art community. Ondergetekende hunter weet natuurlijk wie de artiest is, maar op vraag van de artiest kunnen we zijn identiteit niet prijsgeven.

De aanleiding van het werk is de beslissing van de stad Hasselt om de 'Hall Of Fame', de iconische legal walls aan het Kapermolenpark, te verwijderen in het kader van de renovatie van de Elfde Liniestraat die wordt omgevormd tot een verkeersluwe en groene campus naar Amerikaans model.

Hasselt was in 1994 de eerste stad in België die muren openstelde waar graffitiartiesten zich legaal konden uitleven. In deze fietstunnels hebben veel bekende graffitiartiesten hun eerste stappen gezet, en het was de plek bij uitstek om telkens weer nieuwe werken te ontdekken.

Dat deze legal walls nu gaan verdwijnen is een harde klap voor de lokale street art community. Het inspireerde de maker van deze muurschildering om aan de slag te gaan met het stadslogo en de stadsslogan 'Hasselt heeft het'. Hij herwerkte de slogan tot 'Hasselt HAD het' en integreerde ook de geboorte- en sterfdatum van de legal walls: 1994 - 2025.

Dit is een muurschildering die vragen oproept, en dat was ook de bedoeling van de artiest. 'Heeft' Hasselt het op het gebied van street art nog steeds, of is de verleden tijd 'had' stilaan toch meer van toepassing?

De artiest noemt zijn werk een afscheidsbrief aan een unieke en mooie periode die hij en vele andere graffitiartiesten aan de 'Hall Of Fame' hebben mogen beleven.

De stad Hasselt dacht daar duidelijk anders over: minder dan 48 uur later werd de muurschildering met witte verf overschilderd door de stadsdiensten. Dit kan je zien op de laatste foto.

The reason for the work is the decision of the city of Hasselt to remove the 'Hall Of Fame,' the iconic legal walls at the Kapermolenpark, as part of the renovation of the Elfde Liniestraat, which is being transformed into a low-traffic and green campus based on the American model.

In 1994, Hasselt was the first city in Belgium to open up walls where graffiti artists could legally indulge. Many famous graffiti artists took their first steps in these bicycle tunnels, and it was the place of choice to discover new works again and again.

That these legal walls are now going to disappear is a hard blow to the local street art community. It inspired the creator of this mural to start working with the city logo and the city slogan “Hasselt has it". He adapted the slogan into “Hasselt HAD it” and also integrated the birth and death dates of the legal walls: 1994 - 2025.

This is a mural that raises questions, and that was the artist's intention. Does Hasselt still "have it”, or is the past tense “had” gradually more applicable anyway?

The artist called his work a farewell letter to a unique and beautiful period that he and many other graffiti artists had the privilege of experiencing at the 'Hall Of Fame'.

The city of Hasselt clearly thought otherwise: less than 48 hours later, the mural was painted over with white paint by city authorities. You can see this in the last picture.
