De Hasseltse kunstenaar Niels Vaes maakte op de evenementenweide in het Kapermolenpark deze interventie van een tweekoppige reiger. Deze reiger staat symbool voor de Kempen, waar Kapermolen mee verbonden is. Tegelijkertijd is de reiger ook een symbool van de sterke band die Hasselt met Japan heeft dankzij de Japanse Tuin.

De reiger maakt deel uit van een luchtexpo die de stad Hasselt in samenwerking met SAGA organiseert naar aanleiding van het EK wielrennen in Limburg. Dankzij kunstwerken die de aandacht trekken van de helikopters die het EK in beeld brengen, wilt Hasselt zich profileren als een culturele stad. Dit kunstwerk ligt dan ook niet geheel toevallig in het Kapermolenpark, vlakbij de finish van het EK.

Niels Vaes startte voor zijn kunstwerk met een kleine tekening die hij omzette naar een rastertechniek. Dit raster werd vervolgens nagebootst met touwen op het grasveld. Nadien werden de contouren van de reiger eerst met spuitbussen en vervolgens met een belijningsmachine voor een voetbalveld aangebracht.

Het kunstwerk is het best zichtbaar vanuit de lucht, dus je bekijkt het best vanaf de heuvel aan de linkerzijde van het grasveld.

Hasselt artist Niels Vaes created this intervention of a two-headed heron on the event meadow in Kapermolen park. This heron symbolises the Kempen region, to which Kapermolen is connected. At the same time, the heron is also a symbol of the strong connection Hasselt has with Japan thanks to the Japanese Garden.

The heron is part of an aerial exhibition organised by the city of Hasselt in collaboration with SAGA on the occasion of the European Cycling Championships in Limburg. Thanks to works of art that draw the attention of helicopters portraying the European Championship, Hasselt wants to profile itself as a cultural city. Not entirely coincidentally, then, this work of art is located in the Kapermolen park, near the finish line of the European Championship.

For his artwork, Niels Vaes started with a small drawing, which he converted into a grid technique. This grid was then replicated with ropes on the lawn. Afterwards, the contours of the heron were first applied with spray cans and then with a lineation machine in front of a football pitch.

The artwork is best seen from the air, so it is best viewed from the hill on the left side of the lawn.
