Hoofdstuk 5 verwelkomde de Portugese Mariana, die eerder dit jaar een indoor mural maakte voor KU Leuven campus te Antwerpen en terugkwam om deze officieel in te huldigen. Ze moest niet lang nadenken om het volgende hoofdstuk van le MUR d'Anvers te schrijven....

'SOFT ARMOR' verkent de stille uitputting van zelfpresentatie, het ritueel van het voorbereiden van jezelf op de wereld. Gebaseerd op een zwart-wit filmstill, legt de afbeelding een vrouw vast aan haar kaptafel, gevangen in weerspiegeling en realiteit onder de poeder en het parfum.

Om haar heen vormen flesjes, crèmes en parfums een stilleven van devotie: objecten die transformatie, verhulling, vernieuwing en controle beloven. Haar uitdrukking toont vermoeidheid, de vermoeidheid die voortkomt uit het in stand houden van een imago, uit het uitvoeren van schoonheid als zowel plicht als vermomming.

In deze muurschildering wilde ik ijdelheid niet alleen als oppervlakkigheid weergeven, maar ook als uithoudingsvermogen: de inspanning om mooi, beheerst en bewonderingswaardig te blijven in een wereld die vrouwen beoordeelt op basis van de oppervlakte die ze behouden.

Onder de oppervlakte verzamelen zich in stilte nieuwe gedachten, zorgen en persoonlijke bespiegelingen.

De muurschildering spreekt tot wat verborgen ligt achter de schijn, de innerlijke werelden die we achterhouden, de emoties die de weerspiegeling van de spiegel nooit bereiken.

Le MUR d'Anvers is een 'vrije' muur van 50m² die elke 2 maanden een nieuwe kunstenaar verwelkomt. Het concept komt uit Frankrijk en is een reactie op recente ontwikkelingen in de street art-wereld. Het straatbeeld wordt overspoeld met commerciële muurschilderingen en strikt gecureerde festivals. Creatieve vrijheid staat steeds meer onder druk en culturele toe-eigening loert om de hoek, aangezien de toenemende populariteit van street art officiële instanties zoals toeristische diensten en stadsmarketeers aantrekt. De grassroots-mentaliteit van old school graffiti, waarbij 'je stempel drukken' centraal staat, lijkt verloren te gaan in een wereld van Instagramwaardige foto's en hippe TikTok-video's. Met 'Le MUR d'Anvers' wil Street Art Antwerp een plek creëren waar alle stijlen en vormen van graffiti en street art welkom zijn. Door constante rotatie leren bezoekers alle facetten van street art kennen en dankzij documentatie van het proces door middel van foto's, video's en interviews zal de erfenis van elk werk nooit verloren gaan.

Chapter 5 welcomed the Portuguese artist Mariana, who created an indoor mural for the KU Leuven campus in Antwerp earlier this year and returned to officially inaugurate it. She didn't have to think twice about writing the next chapter of the MUR d'Anvers...

“Soft Armor” explores the quiet exhaustion of self-presentation, the ritual of preparing a face for the world. Based on a black and white film still, the image captures a woman at her dressing table, caught reflection and reality beneath the powder and perfume.

Around her, bottles, creams, and perfumes form a still life of devotion: objects that promise transformation, concealment, renewal and control. Her expression shows fatigue, the weariness that comes from maintaining an image, from performing beauty as both duty and disguise.

In this mural, I wanted to reflect vanity not just as superficiality, but as endurance: the effort to remain beautiful, composed, and worthy of admiration in a world that measures women by the surface they maintain.

Beneath the surface, new thoughts, worries, and private reflections gather in silence.

The mural speaks to what is hidden behind appearances, the inner worlds we withhold, the emotions that never reach the mirror’s reflection.

Le MUR d'Anvers is a 'free' wall of 50m² that welcomes a new artist every 2 months. The concept comes from France and is a response to recent developments in the street art world, the street scene is flooded with commercial murals and strictly curated festivals that seem to come straight from the printer. Creative freedom is increasingly under pressure and cultural appropriation lurks around the corner as the increasing popularity of street art attracts official bodies such as tourism services and city marketers. The grassroots mentality of old school graffiti, where 'leaving your mark' is central, seems to be lost in a world of Instagram-worthy pictures and hip tiktok videos. With 'Le MUR d'Anvers', Street Art Antwerp wants to create a place where all styles and forms of graffiti and street art are welcome. Through constant rotation, visitors will learn all facets of street art and, thanks to documentation of the process through photos, videos and interviews, the legacy of each work will never be lost.
