For this mural, the image from the promotional poster of 'The Holy Innocents' (Los santos inocentes) was selected. This 1984 Spanish drama, directed by Mario Camus and starring Alfredo Landa, Terele Pávez, and Paco Rabal, is based on the novel of the same name by Miguel Delibes. It was filmed in the Extremaduran cities of Mérida, Zafra, and Alburquerque. The film won the Special Jury Prize at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival, where Alfredo Landa and Paco Rabal also shared (ex aequo) the Best Actor Award for their performances.
Miguel Delibes himself stated that he enjoyed the adaptation and was pleased with the vision presented by the director and screenwriters. It was a box-office hit, becoming the highest-grossing film in Spanish cinema at the time, earning 523,904,485 pesetas. You can watch the film's trailer [here].
In the words of Paco Reyes: 'It was time to pay tribute to one of the most emblematic films in our cinema: Los Santos Inocentes. We painted this one on the third floor, next to the Department of Applied Communication Sciences. The challenge with this mural was that it had too many faces, and they were too small. Therefore, the stylized graphic technique might not have been the best idea. It was very difficult to make the faces recognizable with just two or three strokes. Perhaps Landa and Rabal are more recognizable, but the others less so.'
The following photograph shows the reinterpretation of the image using Adobe Photoshop. The image is reduced to flat colors, which makes it easier to transfer to the wall with a limited range of spray paint colors. This technique has been used for most of the murals in the Faculty.
