This artwork celebrates Newtown's gritty past — drawing on history, local stories and old photographs while acknowledging the Gadigal and Wangal peoples of the Sydney Basin, who are the traditional custodians of the lands in which this art is situated.
Left to right we have; a bunyip - an ancient Dreaming creature; native flowers; gif of the Port Jackson fig tree, 'Damun' — after which this ward has been named. A coffee cup — common in the old days and prevalent now; a boxer — referring to the roughness known in Newtown from 1900-1980. Stars and rockets - a shout out tot he murals opposite; a platypus; a water bird; a kangaroo; a characterised bird in old style attire; the red wattle flower; a new style tattoo - showing the changes in traditional street style as well as graffiti; an apple — representing the fruiting of the area; a Pug - showing the area's love for dogs and dog friendly venues.
