The interactive mural by artist Lucy Bonnin is entitled "Up" and invites people to stand in front of the mural and "hold" the balloons for a colourful photo opportunity.
The mural, painted in April 2024 was made possible by City of Mount Gambier's Creative Arts Fund and compliments the existing art "Signalling Change" which was installed in 2016, adding a playful touch for families and children at the nearby play space.
Lucy says the balloons symbolise joy, freedom, creativity and hope, with the aim that people will take the opportunity to take photos of themselves with the mural.
The sculpture is called "Signalling Change" and celebrates the rich railway history of Mount Gambier by referencing railway signals, crossing barriers, indicator lights, railway sleepers and visual communication through shape, colour and light.
It comprises of a number of sculptural elements: two railway signal blades, two railway crossing boom gates, part of a railway signal indicator light, inlaid paving suggesting the shape of railway sleepers, as well as a small number of appropriately positioned seating components. It is constructed from galvanised and/or stainless steel and concrete.
Artists of the "Signalling Change" sculpture are Trevor Wren & Danica Gacesa McLean.
