Description

Rua do Cais da Estação, Coimbra, Portugal.

Cais da Estação refers to the Coimbra-A railway station, located in an upscale area of the city, next to the Mondego River.

The Coimbra Railway Station, popularly known as Coimbra-A and Estação Nova, was a hub for the Lousã branch line, which served the city of Coimbra. This station was inaugurated by the Royal Portuguese Railway Company on October 18, 1885.

The station housed a beautiful building, one of Coimbra's landmarks. It features elements of iron architecture, combining regionalist and modernist styles. With a façade marked by a central stone section with three symmetrical doors and a large clock, the interior features details in plaster, glass, and iron. The building was classified as a Monument of Public Interest in 2013.

Despite popular opposition, it closed after 140 years on January 12, 2025, by city council decision, due to the launch of the MetroBus.
