Berenkuil (officially Insulindeplein) in Eindhoven is a famous traffic circle turned open‑air canvas, with sunken tunnels and underpasses where bicycle paths run, and concrete walls that have become a legal free‑zone for graffiti artists. Since the late 1990s, crews like SOL began using latex and spray paints in the Berenkuil, transforming its blank grey walls into vivid, ever‑changing artworks. Each June, the site hosts Step in the Arena, a major international graffiti festival that brings together over a hundred artists from home and abroad to paint the walls, tunnels, and arenas of the Berenkuil.
Over the years Step in the Arena has used thousands of spray cans and liters of latex to fill the space, preserving authenticity by allowing creators to show diverse styles—from letter‑based graff to cartoons, photorealism and experimental forms. The festival has made the Berenkuil not just a hotspot for street art, but also an important meeting place for the graffiti community, where respect, competition, and creativity intersect.
Though Step in the Arena officially ended in 2024, its legacy lives on in the walls of Berenkuil and the spirit of street artists who continue to paint there year‑round.
