The mosaic near Ludwigshafen main station shows the famous Pokémon Pikachu.

Since 2025, an anonymous street artist has been transforming Ludwigshafen with vibrant pixel-art mosaics. Over 60 artworks are now scattered across the city, appearing unexpectedly on walls, bridges, and lampposts.

The "Phantom’s" signature style features nostalgic 90s retro video game characters, including Super Mario, Pac-Man, Toad, and various Pokémon. In a rare interview, the artist stated their simple goal is to "bring color into the gray."

The response is overwhelmingly positive. While residents enjoy the nostalgic childhood memories, the city administration officially tolerates the art for enhancing the urban landscape.
