António Palolo

António Palolo (Évora, 1946 — Lisbon, 2000) was a Portuguese visual artist and painter. Born in Évora in 1946, António Palolo was a self-taught artist whose work emerged early, immediately revealing an unusual maturity. He exhibited his work individually for the first time in 1964, at Galeria 111, Lisbon (a gallery to which he remained linked until the beginning of the 1980s).

Located in an ambiguous territory, between figuration and abstraction, his initial works "are disordered and chaotic compositions" populated by a multiplicity of elements, from small signs to abstract forms, and where a rigorous geometric definition is inscribed.

This formal universe quickly evolved into a distinctly Pop language, informed by a culture where comics, hippie folklore, and the fantastical joy of primitive scenes abounded.

In the early 1970s, figurative allusions disappeared and Palolo adopted a geometric approach, highlighting structures, angles and almost simulations of objects.

In the early 1980s, his work changed direction. His painting is invaded by ambiguous figures, by a world of "fantastic beings, warriors of primordial dreams. This figurative incursion continues "until the beginning of the second half of the 80s, when the artist makes a synthesis of the essential aspects of his work to settle on a language and a program that would last until his premature disappearance, in 2000.
