The Évora Cathedral is considered a building of Romanesque-Gothic style, or even of National Gothic style with Cistercian and mendicant influence. Its construction was inspired by the model of the Lisbon Cathedral and foreign cathedrals, particularly Spanish and French, proving to be of great importance, not only as the terminal point of the Romanesque and the initial point of the Gothic, but above all due to the variety of transitional solutions employed. Its main architects or master builders were Domingos Pires, between 1280 and 1303, and Martim Domingues, responsible for finishing the construction, between 1304 and 1334, when the cloister and the main entrance portico were built. The latter is considered one of the most impressive Portuguese Gothic portals, with six archivolts and an apostule in a sculpture carved in marble by an unknown author.
