The Yearlings

This bronze sculpture of three running foals underwent a major restoration in 2022–23 to repair faults in the horses’ legs and replace its support structure.

George-Ann Tognoni grew up on an Iowa farm and raised Shetland ponies as a child. She went to Minneapolis to pursue a fashion degree and worked in fashion manufacturing in Minneapolis and Los Angeles. When World War II began, she returned to the family farm as a hired hand. Tognoni was introduced to sculpture at the University of New Mexico during the war. In 1945, she joined the Red Cross and served in the Philippines. After raising five children, she returned to sculpture full time. Tognoni died in 2008 at her home in Phoenix at the age of 88.

Located at the west entrance to the Scottsdale Civic Center, this bronze—originally completed in 1981—was purchased through community fundraising efforts by the Yearlings Committee and the Scottsdale Western Art Association in 1985 and donated to the city of Scottsdale. Tognoni also created the Winfield Scott Memorial sculpture in front of the Scottsdale Historical Museum (Little Red School House), just east of The Yearlings at Scottsdale Civic Center.
