The kraken of Burgstaaken

This gigantic mural, painted by Hamburg-based graffiti artist Mone, transforms the silo at Burgstaaken into a surreal maritime spectacle. Titled “Der Kraken von Burgstaaken” (The Kraken of Burgstaaken), the work spreads across an impressive 1,200 square meters, making it one of the largest pieces of street art on the island of Fehmarn.

The mural depicts a fantastical kraken rising from the sea, its massive tentacles curling across the silo’s curved façade. The creature is no ordinary sea monster: its design blends cartoonish exaggeration with surreal detail. A huge, gaping mouth dominates the center, flanked by oversized eyes, playful pirate hats, and even a tentacle morphing into a shark’s head. Ships are tossed around in its chaotic embrace, while the surrounding sea churns with energy and color.

Mone’s unmistakable style, marked by glossy highlights, bold colors, and elastic forms, breathes life into the gray concrete, transforming it into a playful yet powerful maritime fantasy. The sheer scale of the piece (about 40 by 28 meters) demanded over 200 hours of work, which he completed using ropes and climbing gear to reach every corner of the towering surface.

The title of the work, painted boldly at the bottom, anchors the mural in its local setting: Burgstaaken, a harbor town long connected to fishing, sailing, and the sea. By merging this tradition with a humorous, larger-than-life sea monster, Mone gives the silo a new identity as both landmark and cultural attraction.
