This mural was created during an artists residency analysing the importance of women in the workplace post revolution (Portugal, 5 April 1974). The mural is part of the Exhibition "Porto de Nós - Confluências Transnacionais" (The Port of Us - Transnational Confluences) which covered the work of 45 artists from 7 countries.
This mural is a contemporary take on 'Our Lady of Sorrow' which is the focal point of one of the towns religious processions which is run and produced by a close-knit and dedicated group of volunteer women from the village. In rural areas church communities become more prominent and important in countries like Portugal and the work done within the church communities by these women is often over looked even though it plays a critical role in the fabric of these more remote villages in Portugal.
The white lilies often associated with 'Our Lady of Sorrows' represent purity, innocence and virginity aligning with Marys immaculate conception which are key tenants of Catholicism and the blue colour of her cloak is a further focus on her purity, both are focal points of the mural which is encompassed in a hand gilded silver leaf nimbus.
