The montage-like sequence of images in the mural depicts scenes from the history of the so-called Westfalensiedlung, located behind the bunker and known to locals in Bremen as "Little Mexico." The central motif on the long side of the bunker portrays a scene from the 1979 street festival on Wupperstraße. The viewer looks down onto a table, scattered with notes and photos that feature scenes from the festival as well as moments from the settlement’s history, from its founding in 1927, through the war and post-war reconstruction, up to the 1980s.
On the mural on the bunker’s front side, two girls are shown happily playing in a sandbox. However, in the upper part of the image, burn marks disrupt the idyllic scene—an artistic reference to the threat posed to people and nature by the Chernobyl disaster in 1986.
The mural was created in collaboration with artists Uwe Oswald and Klaus Baring.
