Mariska Veres

Mariska Veres, the singer of Shocking Blue, on the wall of the Stedin house Prins Hendrikplein 2T in the summer of 2020.

Paintings of The Hague's rock history have been painted at 2 locations in Zeeheldenkwartier. The famous bands Shocking Blue and The Motions had their home base in this district in the 1960s. On the transformer house on Prins Hendrikplein is an image of Mariska Veres, the singer of Shocking Blue. She lived in Van Speijkstraat for a while. On the blind wall of the corner building of Zoutmanstraat and Elandstraat is the text of The Motions' first hit, Wasted Words. Singer Rudy Bennett also lived in the district at the time.

Initiator Henk Augustijn believes that more attention should be paid to the musical history of The Hague. The Hague has been known as the Beat City of the Netherlands since the 1960s. It was the birthplace of the ' Nederbiet '. The Hague produced many famous bands such as Golden Earring, Q65, The Motions, Shocking Blue, Sandy Coast and Earth and Fire. Strangely enough, little of this can be found in the city. In order to change that, Augustijn has already painted murals of Q65, the Tielman Brothers and Golden Earring in other places in The Hague. According to him, The Motions and Shocking Blue should not be missing.

Both bands scored big hits in the 1960s. The Motions were the first Dutch 'beat group' to reach the charts. The protest song Wasted Words sold more than 25,000 copies, making it to number three on the charts. Guitarist Robbie van Leeuwen left the band in 1967 and founded Shocking Blue. In 1969, that band made the song Venus , which became a huge success worldwide, reaching number one in countries including France, Spain, South Africa, Australia and the United States.
