The piece we are looking at now was the very first to be installed in the Faculty. Its history dates back to 1995, the year Professor Paco Reyes presented a proposal for creating murals on the Faculty walls to the Dean at the time, Alfonso Javier Fernández del Moral (who served as Dean from 1990 to 1998). He did this alongside graphic design professor Javier González Solas, with whom he had recreated the sketch of the character designed in 1898 for the Michelin tire brand: Bibendum. The idea was to create a series of murals featuring images related to the three degrees taught at the Faculty.
The Bibendum figure, which is pasted on the stairs connecting the main floor to the first basement (sótano 1), was intended to be temporary; its purpose was to show the Dean how it would look if it were actually painted. The project was put on hold, but the figure remained in its provisional spot... and 26 years later, it is still there, having become one of the Faculty's most iconic images.
