Bedum is an old village around the city of Groningen. Centuries ago there was a man named Walfridus who rrigated the land and made it more suitable for living. He was a religious man and together with his son he was beheaded by the Vikings, so the story goes. The old crooked church (even less straight than the tower of Pisa!) is named after him, and also the senior-housing complex where this mural is located carries his name.
The church is depicted on the mural on both sides. On the one side you see it in its present form, together with the well-known yellow bridge. On the other side you see the the same tower, only 150 years ago. It had a different roof at the time. After a fire it was roofless for years... It's the tower on the left.
The flowers have their origin in the region.
Tip: inside the building I also painted flowers and a agricultural skyline onto the long green walls..
