Named “Not the Future I Want”, this is a mural I painted for the STEAM Project at the P.S.9 Public School in Brooklyn, NY in 2019.
This was a last-minute invitation that gave me no time to plan or even sketch the project. However, the theme pushed me out of my comfort zone and I am happy with the result and the feedback about this free-handed mural.
“Not the Future I Want” was a part of the “STEAM Project”, that brought 20+ artists, mostly from New York, together to help change the way the community, parents, and students see their school, located in a developing neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY.
As a matter of fact, I always try to convey happy positive messages and mostly smiling kids on my public art works. But when I received this brief to create something with the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) theme, my main concerns were not being too literal and also opening a discussion about a very important issue that has been being denied and ignored by many.
So, because I believe the future of our planet is on the hands of this new generation, I thought that taking care of our Planet should be the main concern of our future STEAM thinkers. Global Warming is a real issue, it should be discussed since the early age and brought to the classrooms and household conversations as an important topic for discussion.
Awareness can change the game, and this generation of kids can bring a new mindset that is the key for the change we need! I believe in our children!!! I believe in a better future!!! This project was curated by Jeff Beler, and I’m proud and humbled to be a part of this. 🙏🏽❤️🌎
