A portrait in memory of Courtney Herron by Amanda Newman.
Amanda writes “Courtney was brutally killed in 2019 by a man she’d just met that day. He was in need and she bought him dinner in Fitzroy. He had mental health issues and a history of violent attacks on women, and he attacked her while they were walking through Royal Park together that night.
Courtney’s murder could have been prevented, but the system continuously let her killer back out on the streets without any assistance. He’s now in a secure mental health facility but it took Courtney’s murder for that to happen.
Courtney’s father, John, is an attorney and now advocates for victims of domestic violence. He fights for women daily and is trying to change the broken system that allows violence and abuse to continue until an entirely preventable murder is the outcome.”
