The Illustrated History of Hairdressing

Commissioned in 2014 by the local Council, this mural is on the side of Tom Gallo Hair on busy Darling Street in the inner Sydney suburb of Rozelle.

The mural depicts the "evolution" of hair dressing through time - from the Big Bang to the present. We can see depicted along the mural different stages of hairdressing - the use of stones and flint to modern day apparatus and tools such as scissors, combs, spray bottles, hair dryers and the famous "barber shop pole" to identify where to get a cut. Contrasting all of that is also the evolution of hair styles (notice the women with perms, the guy with the mullet, dreadlocks and the punk mohawk)!

Mural artist Ida Lawrence was assisted by Caitlin Hespe, Naomi Mikhaiel, L.C.S., Hana Hoogedeure, Lillie Bennetts, Eko Bambang Wisnu.

Note: Tom Gallo Hair is a local business institution and Tom Gallo "the hairdresser' is a Rozelle living legend and still cuts and styles and shaves to this day.
