The mural depicts two hands clasped together in a symbolic “passing of the baton” between the elderly and the young, between those who lived through deportation and those who will only hear about it as they grow up. It conveys the vital importance of preserving memory, so that the tragedies of the past may never be repeated; a future that lies in the hands of children.
The work is a tribute to Leon Greenman, identified here through the tattoo with which prisoners in concentration camps were tragically marked. A survivor of Auschwitz, the British author dedicated his entire life to bearing witness, engaging in particular with young people and children.
The chromatic choice of the background conveys a sense of peace and light, while the soft tones emphasise the powerful gesture placed at the forefront.
