The monumental mural created by JDL on the façade of the INAIL headquarters in Padua addresses, with striking visual power and symbolic intensity, the theme of overcoming limits, inner rebirth, and human dignity despite the fragility of the body.
Two female figures dominate the surface. One – dressed in white, bound, her body abandoned and her head tilted backwards – appears suspended in a gesture of vulnerability and, at the same time, of spiritual elevation. A golden circle behind her evokes a secular halo, an opening towards the transcendent. The other figure, endowed with angel’s wings, lifts her gently, supporting her in a gesture both powerful and compassionate. The wings are not merely anatomical: they symbolise freedom, support, and inner strength.
The ropes at their ankles, binding both figures, allude to the condition of physical constraint – such as the paralysis experienced by Giuseppe, an INAIL beneficiary who began corresponding with JDL after being deeply moved by the artist’s first mural on another façade of the same building during Super Walls 2023. Yet those same ropes seem to loosen in the act of lifting, suggesting that even from the prison of the body a new possibility of elevation can arise. The turquoise strokes flowing from the bindings reinforce the idea that from wounds may spring energy, transformation, and hope.
In this context, the wings become a visual symbol of INAIL’s role: an institution that, like an angel, helps those who have suffered trauma to rise again. But they also reflect that invisible force which enables one to “fly within”, despite the limits imposed by the body.
