Oldest city in the Netherlands

This Waalpainting brings the Roman city of Ulpia Noviomagus Batavorum back to life. This city arose after the Batavian Revolt (68/69) in what is now Nijmegen-West. Among the most important buildings recovered were a bathhouse and two temples (for the gods Mercury and Fortuna). The city received market rights from Emperor Trajan around the year 100. This is how Nijmegen got its name; Noviomagus literally means "New Market". The mural on Nieuwe Marktstraat is packed with references to the Roman city.
