The image used for this mural is a portrait of three of the five Marx Brothers: Leonard Marx (Chico), Arthur Marx (Harpo), and Julius Henry Marx (Groucho). The Marx Brothers were American comedians from New York who achieved enormous success first in vaudeville, then on Broadway, and later in cinema. Five of their films are included in the American Film Institute's list of the 100 best comedies.
They had a significant musical background that was evident in their films, some of which were massive hits. Their humor can be described as a blend of vaudeville, the absurd, and slapstick or situation comedy. Some of their most important films include: Duck Soup (1933), A Night at the Opera (1935), A Day at the Races (1937), Room Service (1938), At the Circus (1939), and Go West (1940).
In the words of Paco Reyes: 'The next mural, the Marx Brothers, was the one we finished the fastest (about three hours between setting up, painting, and packing away). It made sense, as we had already completed several murals and learned from our mistakes. It was also a simple drawing, with just four shades of gray, plus white and black. It was the most fun to do and remains one of my favorites. Sadly, when you ask Audiovisual Communication students about the Marx Brothers today, almost no one knows who you’re talking about.'
