Hybrid Skin

The building on The Wagnerplein (Wagner Square) is designed by @VenhoevenCS Architects and painted by @jeanlucmoermanbis and is a key project within the Tilburg-North area development plan that is meant to make the neighborhood more attractive to a broader spectrum of the public.

While society outside the building may be divided into different groups living alongside each other (or with their backs to each other), inside the building they strive to bring people together in relaxed, informal ways.
As spectacular as the views inside the building are, the building’s exterior also turns heads. It gives the building project a strength, speed and fluidity that form a perfect complement to the functions inside the building.
The black lines on the white façade were inspired by muscles, movement and freedom.
The design of lines are painted with black paint on a white background, so that building and drawing form a balanced whole. Moerman's large-scale drawings are reminiscent of muscle masses or tattoos. They are lines and curves without beginning or end, analogue to muscles in a body or ivy growing against a wall. The drawing's kinship with muscle masses or tattoos will appeal to a wide audience and evoke a sense of familiarity appropriate to the specific nature of a multi-purpose sports facility. It is this unifying quality that makes the building something special.
