Set in semi-circular niches beside the front doors of most homes, these ground-level holes are often overlooked but also fascinate many people. They're actually  boot scrapers, used by visitors to clean the mud off their shoes before entering the house. They’ve been around since the 18th century and are almost like a predecessor to the modern door-mat. Like any functional piece of architecture, many of these iron pieces are highly decorative, complementing the overall design of the building they are attached to.

To give these historical memorabilia a new meaning: a community project transforms them in tiny artworks inspired by stories of the people who live there. To avoid spoilers and enhance the fun we don't share the exact location so you need to look for them. Happy hunting.

This scraper is dedicated to Roger Van de Velde. Ellen Van Pelt who lives here now about him following his death 50 years ago (1970)
 
In the turbulent 1960s Roger Van de Velde's tragic course of life drew attention. He was incarcerated for falsifying doctor's prescriptions for a drug prescribed for his stomach. He spent eight years in dire circumstances  behind bars. His literary work was wrongly overshadowed by his life.
Fifty years later, his lyrics still last. His story, his life and work deserve a right of reply.

Deze schraper is opgedragen aan Roger Van de Velde. Ellen Van Pelt de bewoonster van dit huis. Schreef het afgelopen jaar een biografie over hem naar aanleiding van zijn overlijden dat 50 jaar geleden is dit jaar. 

In de woelige jaren zestig trok Roger Van de Veldes tragische levensloop de aandacht. Hij werd opgesloten vanwege het vervalsen van doktersvoorschriften voor een medicijn dat hem voor zijn maag was voorgeschreven. Acht jaar bracht hij in erbarmelijke omstandigheden
door achter tralies. Ten onrechte werd zijn literaire werk overschaduwd door zijn leven.
Vijftig jaar later beklijven zijn teksten nog altijd. Zijn verhaal, zijn leven en werk verdienen een recht op antwoord.
