Library mural

The ‘Library’ mural, in the heart of Oak Flats village, enhances the visibility of the library within the Oak Flats town centre. Connecting with the existing north façade mural, together they make a prominent placemaking feature.

Sydney based artist, Sarah McCloskey, painted the initial mural ‘Future shade’ (facing Fisher St) in 2020. ‘Future Shade’ is based on the notion of planting seeds to create shade for future generations. This ‘Library’ mural was designed to link coherently with Sarah’s previous work. It features wattle blooms and leaves, acacia seed motifs and the silhouette of the flame tree. The undulating lines that span the length of the wall are drawn from aerial maps of the Lake Illawarra shoreline near the Oak Flats area.

Sarah McCloskey’s art practice works across numerous mediums, and centres on themes of identity, place and connection. She finds inspiration in the interplay between the human form and the natural world. Her paintings seek to evoke a sense of intrigue and familiarity, and act as an invitation to consider the universal experiences that connect us all.
